Tuina, a traditional Chinese massage therapy, can help relieve a variety of issues in pets

Tuina, also known as Tui Na, is a traditional Chinese massage therapy that has been used for thousands of years to treat various health conditions.

It is a form of manual therapy that involves the use of hands, fingers and elbows to apply pressure on specific points of the body. Tuina is based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine and is often used in conjunction with acupuncture, herbal medicine and other traditional veterinary therapies.

The history of Tuina can be traced back to ancient China, where it was used as a form of medical treatment. The earliest written records of Tuina date to the Han Dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE). Tuina was used to treat a wide range of health conditions, including musculoskeletal disorders, digestive disorders, respiratory disorders and neurological disorders.

Over the centuries, Tuina has evolved into a sophisticated system of manual therapy. This modality can really help arthritic senior pets and those recovering from surgeries to heal faster and with less pain.

Tuina works by stimulating the flow of Qi, pronounced "chee," which is the vital energy that flows through the body. According to traditional Chinese veterinary medicine, Qi flows through a network of channels or meridians that connect the organs and tissues of the body. When Qi is flowing smoothly, the body is healthy. However, when Qi is blocked or disrupted, it can lead to pain, illness and disease.

Tuina works by applying pressure on specific points of the body to stimulate the flow of Qi and promote healing. The pressure can be applied using various techniques, including rubbing, kneading, pressing and tapping. Tuina can also involve stretching and joint manipulation to improve mobility and flexibility.

Tuina has shown to be effective in treating a wide range of health conditions, including:

  • Musculoskeletal disorders: Tuina can help relieve pain and stiffness in the muscles, joints, and bones. It is often used to treat conditions such as back pain, neck pain, arthritis and sports injuries. Dogs enjoy the massages and respond well to them.

  • Digestive disorders: Tuina can help improve digestion and relieve symptoms of digestive disorders such as bloating, constipation and diarrhea. We use it especially in older cats that have trouble defecating; we teach the owners how to do some exercises at home.

  • Respiratory disorders: Tuina can help relieve symptoms of respiratory disorders such as asthma, bronchitis and sinusitis.

  • Neurological disorders: Tuina can help improve circulation and nerve function, which can help relieve symptoms of neurological disorders in paralyzed patients.

  • Stress and anxiety: Tuina can help promote relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety in pets, and this can be a great way to soothe rescued or traumatized pets.

At our practice, Tuina has become a way for owners to participate in the recovery and healing of their pets.
