Tuition could go up at USI one year after move to Division I

EVANSVILLE – University of Southern Indiana students could soon be paying hundreds more in tuition than they are now.

The school’s board of trustees will vote Monday on whether to raise the school's per-credit hour rates for all students. The increases would come in two waves – one bump for the 2023-24 school year, and another for 2024-25 – and arrive a little less than a year after USI moved into Division I athletics.

According to the agenda posted on USI's website, here's how the fees could change.

Indiana resident undergraduate per credit hour

Current rate: $280.51

Proposed 2023-24 rate: $289.70

Proposed 2024-25 rate: $299.19

Indiana non-resident undergraduate per credit hour

Current rate: $681.99

Proposed 2023-24 rate: $704.25

Proposed 2024-25 rate: $727.23

Indiana resident graduate studies per credit hour

Current rate: $419.06

Proposed 2023-24 rate: $432.78

Proposed 2024-25 rate: $446.94

Indiana non-resident graduate studies per credit hour

Current rate: $820.86

Proposed 2023-24 rate: $847.66

Proposed 2024-25 rate: $875.33

To be considered a full-time student, an undergraduate must take at least 12 credit hours per semester. If the changes go through, an undergraduate from Indiana taking that course load would shell out about $450 more per year.

The proposed hikes are the latest increases as USI attempts to basically double its athletic budget to stay competitive in D-I. Student fees jumped last year as part of a four-year plan to increase funding.

The board of trustees meeting will take place Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the Griffin Center on campus.
