Tulip Time picks best bicycle-inspired art

HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — A painting named “Dutch Delivery” will be featured on merchandise, souvenirs and a custom beer during Tulip Time this year after being chosen as winner of the poster contest.

John Cowden’s oil on canvas painting features an orange bicycle at the DeZwaan Windmill and tulip fields at Windmill Island Gardens. A pot of red tulips and a Dutch flag rest in the basket. The piece was chosen from 83 submissions.

The theme of this year’s poster competition, to mark Tulip Time’s 95th year, was bicycles.

“When it was announced that the theme for the 2024 Tulip Time Festival would be ‘Bicycles,’ I immediately thought of a photograph I captured at Windmill Island Gardens the previous year. It incorporates so many aspects of Holland and the Tulip Time Festival. I know I needed to base a work of art on that image.” Cowden explained.

Tulip Time 2024 will feature public’s ‘pedal’ art

Copies of “Dutch Delivery” will be sold at the Tulip Time Festival office at 42 W 8th Street in downtown Holland. It will also appear on merchandise, souvenirs and Tulip Time’s custom beer, brewed by Big Lake Brewing.

Just over two months away from its May 4 start date, Tulip Time has been nominated for USA Today’s 10Best Reader’s Choice award for Best Flower Festival. One of twenty, Tulip Time is competing against the likes of Mackinac Island’s Lilac Festival, Washington D.C.’s National Cherry Blossom Festival and Macy’s Flower Show in New York City.

Tulip Time is encouraging its fans to vote to “let the whole world know how great Holland’s small-town festival is,” it wrote in a release. Voting is open until March 29 at 12 p.m. Eastern Time.

Tulip Time won the award in 2016.
