Tulsa police say storage unit theft was a crime of opportunity

Tulsa police are searching for a man with a distinctive tattoo following a bizarre robbery.

Investigators say the man burglarized several storage units at Briarglen Mini Storage near 31st and 129th East Avenue. They say the thief forced the facility’s gate open and drove his mid-2000s Chevy truck through it.

Lieutenant Tim Means with TPD’s Burglary Unit said the man popped the padlocks off of at least three storage units, stealing thousands of dollars in tools and other items.

“We’ve only had one victim come forward at this time,” said Means. “There’s multiple victims, so we don’t know the exact amount that was taken during all of the burglaries. Looking at the back of the truck that’s filled with property, it would be a substantial loss to all of these people.”

Lt. Means said storage unit thefts are common and often a crime of opportunity.

“We get a lot of storage unit burglaries, throughout the City of Tulsa. It’s one of those things where some individuals don’t go back and forth between their units very often, and when they do, they sometimes would see that something’s wrong, something’s out of place or something’s missing.”

Lt. Means says the best way to protect your property in a storage unit is to visit the unit frequently.
