Tumblr ban, Comey and federal shutdown: 5 things you need to know Monday

Tumblr to ban adult content — and some users are fuming

Tumblr, the popular blogging site owned by Verizon, is set to ban adult content beginning Monday. The move comes about three weeks after its app was dropped from Apple's App Store following child sex abuse content that appeared on the site. Tumblr "immediately removed this content" after it was spotted and announced plants to ban all adult content, including photos of genitalia, as well as photos, videos, illustrations and GIFs of sex acts. An online backlash quickly ensued on Twitter. "The place served as a great site for underground artists of all content — including those who like SEX," offered one poster.

Comey returns to testify for GOP lawmakers

Former FBI Director James Comey will testify before lawmakers Monday, less than two weeks after a previous hearing left him frustrated that "we're talking again about Hillary Clinton’s emails, for Heaven’s sake." The closed-door testimony comes at the behest of GOP leaders, who earlier this month questioned Comey about his decision to not prosecute former Secretary of State Clinton for her use of a private email server in 2016. Democrats called the hearing between two House committee' members a waste of time. "I’m trying to respect the institution and to answer questions in a respectful way," Comey said after the Dec. 7 hearing.

Catholic order may reveal priests accused of sexually abusing minors

Monday, the Midwest and Maryland provinces of the Jesuits — the largest male religious order in the Catholic Church — are likely to release their lists of priests dating back to 1955 who were accused of sexually abusing minors. Among those likely to be named is Rev. Donald J. O’Shaughnessy, a priest who allegedly tormented a boy named Bill Reidy. Now an adult, Reidy says he remembers every detail about the office where he was repeatedly raped by the Jesuit priest who served as his academic adviser at Loyola Academy, a private Catholic school just outside Chicago.

A federal shutdown? Not for the Postal Service

If Congress and the White House don't make a deal this week to stave off a partial government shutdown, the third shutdown since President Trump took office could start Saturday — three days before Christmas. Will your presents and relatives can make the journey without problems? The U.S. Postal Service anticipates that Monday will be its busiest day online, but as an independent agency it won't be affected in any government shutdown. And air traffic controllers still will be on the job after midnight Friday, even if Congress can't stop another federal shutdown.

Peter Jackson brings WWI footage to life in vibrant color

Oscar-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson brings the awe to World War I with the film "They Shall Not Grow Old," which plays in theaters nationwide Monday with Fathom Events. The "Lord of the Rings" filmmaker produced the film from 2,700 hours of grainy, faded footage. The footage was repaired and realistically colorized, with forensic lip readers hired to determine what soldiers were saying onscreen. Speakers with the appropriate dialect added the words. The first unforgettable scene pulls in close — in color and in 3D — on a young soldier, with exploding shells around him. Yet he's wide-eyed at the camera recording him.
