Tune into these movies, marathons and holiday specials on New Year's Eve

For many central Ohioans, New Year’s Eve will be a time of revelry, merry-making and partygoing.

Some of us, though, prefer to avoid the crowds and celebrate at home for at least some of the day.

For those of us who’d rather pour our glass of champagne in our favorite chair or sofa, there are plenty of programs on TV to keep us company. From special New Year’s Eve broadcasts to numerous movie and TV marathons, many channels are offering special programming.

In the listings that follow, The Dispatch has gathered several can’t-miss highlights on TV on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

∙ “The Twilight Zone marathon, starting at 5 a.m. Saturday, SyFy: Did you know that “Twilight Zone” creator Rod Serling was a graduate of Antioch College in Yellow Springs? Check out all the weird and fantastical things that were rolling around in his mind in a marathon that continues all day Saturday, Sunday and Monday — and into the early morning hours of Tuesday.

∙ “That’s Entertainment!” marathon, starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, Turner Classic Movies: Fans of classic MGM musicals won’t want to miss all three feature-length compilations of highlights from the studio’s archives. The original “That’s Entertainment!” will be followed by “That’s Entertainment! II” at 1:30 p.m. and “That’s Entertainment! III” at 3:45 p.m.

∙ “Yellowstone marathon, starting at noon Saturday, Paramount Network: Need a primer on what’s been going on with the hugely popular series starring Kevin Costner? Here’s your chance to catch up. (More “Yellowstone” starts at 7 a.m. Sunday.)

∙ “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest,” 8 p.m. Saturday, WSYX-TV (Channel 6): The annual celebratory countdown will commence at 8 p.m. with additional blocks of programming starting again at 10:30.

∙ “The Thin Man” marathon, starting at 8 p.m. Saturday, Turner Classic Movies: If your idea of a good time involves tagging along with Nick and Nora Charles as they stylishly solve assorted crimes, be sure to check out a few of the six films starring William Powell and Myrna Loy, all of which will be shown on TCM into the wee hours.

∙ “Ghost Adventures marathon, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Travel Channel: Take a tour of countless haunted spaces across America in the company of ghost hunter Zak Bagans and his team of paranormal experts. (For more ghostly goings-on, Travel Channel is also showing “Paranormal Caught on Camera” all day long on Saturday.)

∙ “From Vienna: The New Year’s Celebration 2023,” 8 p.m. Sunday, WOSU-TV (Channel 34): Hugh Bonneville will serve as host to the annual waltz-heavy concert given by the world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic, which will be guest-conducted by Franz Welser-Most of the Cleveland Orchestra.
