If a wore a hat, I would raise it to the moon in acknowledgement of the great performance that Bartlesville High’s David Castillo put forth the USA Basketball 17U men’s team in Saturday’s opener in the RIBA World Cup tournament in Spain.

Castillo — a 6-foot-2 point guard — came off the bunch to pour in a team-high 21 points to spearhead the Americans to a 120-44 victory against Lebanon.

He also pulled down three rebounds, handed out an assist and made two steals — in less than 20 minutes of action.

Cooper Flagg also made a major contribution off the pine, pulling down a team-high 13 rebounds.

Some of the other big guns for the USA squad were Ian Jackson (21 points, 5 boards), Ronald Holland (16 points, 6 boards), Jeremy Fears Jr. (11 points, 4 rebounds), Koa Peat (11 points, 7 rebounds),   Johnuel Omari Fland (4 points, 7 rebounds, 9 assists, 5 steals), and D.J. Wagner (10 points, 4 steals).

David has been a two-year varsity starter for the Bartlesville High Bruin team and has surpassed 1,000 career points.

When it came to a little more than frontier baseball, Dewey’s town team loomed over Bartlesville’s aggregation like a cobra rising above a gopher’s sigh.

Dewey won on its homefield, 20-7.

According to the newspaper report, “… the Deweyites — lean and lank citizens that they are — rapped the horsehide so hard that they blistered their hands …”

Meanwhile, Dewey pitcher Joe Bartles bedeviled the Bartlesville bats with slack magic.

Frank Byers made the loudest offensive thunder for Dewey — crushing a homer in the latter innings.

Leo McBrian umpired for Bartlesville and Clark filled the same duty for Dewey.

Bartlesville captain Wilhite scheduled a rematch.

“It is to be hoped that he will have a team this time,” the newspaper article concluded.

Despite being on the smaller side (6-2, 205) and playing for a Bartlesville High team that finished at 2-8, Flo Gonzalez was named to the OCA All-State East Football Team.

Gonzalez, who played center, didn’t allow a sack — a significant achievement considering Bartlesville still gave up more than 40 sacks.

Gonzalez had had to battle earlier in his prep career through a knee injury.
