TurboTax settlement checks coming for taxpayers who could have filed for free

If you filed for tax returns with TurboTax from 2016 to 2018 payments are beginning to be sent out to thousands of customers who were tricked into paying for free tax Intuit services.

The company’s settlement, which was originally announced last year, is worth $141 million and applies to approximately 4.4 million consumers nationwide.

Additionally, the settlement required TurboTax to suspend the use of its “free, free, free” ad campaign that promised free tax preparation, only to deceive them into paying for services.

TurboTax was a participant in the IRS Free File Program, under which the company agreed to allow qualifying taxpayers to file their taxes for free. In exchange, the IRS agreed not to compete with Intuit or other companies by creating its own service.

These consumers will receive a payment automatically, without needing to file a claim. Payments will be made by check, mailed throughout May 2023.

The amount each consumer receives will be based on the number of tax years for which they qualify. Most consumers are expected to receive between $29 and $30.
