The Directorate-General of Maritime Affairs under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Turkey has made the relevant decision, the newspaper said.

The new passage fee (covering sanitary inspection, lighthouse and rescue services) is set at $4.42 per net tonnage of a merchant vessel. Thus, the fee will rise by 8.3%.

In previous years, the revenue from the passage of ships amounted to about $160-170 million, excluding pilotage and towing services.

In 2023, it may reach $900 million, Aydinlik reported.

The Turkish authorities increased the fee for the passage of ships by five times, to $4.08 per net tonnage, in October 2022 – the first time the fee was raised in 40 years.

Vessel passage fees have been calculated on the basis of the gold franc since the signing of the 1936 Montreux Convention.

At the time of signing, the gold franc was equated to $0.8 or 0.29 gr. of pure gold. After that, the fee was updated only in 1983.

The value of the gold franc will now be updated by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure every year at the end of June.
