Turkeys and hams: With Thanksgiving around the corner, here is where you can get your bird

Some families will be celebrating Thanksgiving at a restaurant. Others will get takeout.

But for some, Thanksgiving wouldn't be the same without buying a fresh turkey and spending the time to prepare it with all the fixings.

With the holiday around the corner, turkey farms are accepting orders to provide customers with fresh turkeys for Thanksgiving.

Here's a list of turkey farms still accepting orders on the South Shore and beyond.

Bongi's Turkey Roast

Bongi's Turkey Roost has been selling turkeys for the last 75 years in Duxbury and is offering fresh turkeys for this year's holiday. Turkeys from 12 to more than 30 pounds are raised on family farms, fed a vegetarian diet and are free of antibiotics.

No ordering is necessary. They'll be sold on a first-come, first-served basis starting Nov. 19. Boneless turkey breast is also available, with customers able to buy between 6 and 8 pounds. Pickup for this is set for Nov. 21.

Gerard Turkey Farm

Marshfield’s Gerard Farm has been accepting Thanksgiving orders since Nov. 1. Fully cooked roasted and stuffed turkeys with gravy cost $4.99 a pound plus a $30 roasting charge.

Fresh uncooked turkeys are also for sale, but customers are asked to check back after Nov. 15 for available sizes.

Pickup dates for all orders are scheduled for Nov. 21 and 22 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with orders by phone at 781-834-7682. Gerard Farm is at 1331 Ocean St. (Route 139), Marshfield.

Hornstra Farms

Hornstra Farms in Norwell is offering turkeys and baked pies. The smallest turkey is between 14 and 15 pounds. Turkeys cost $5.99 a pound.

Pies include apple, apple crisp, apple-cranberry, blueberry, pumpkin and pecan. Customers can pre-order turkeys and pies in person at the Norwell store or call 781-749-1222.

Hornstra Farms’ Norwell store is at 246 Prospect St.

Copicut Farms

Outside the South Shore, Copicut Farms in Dartmouth is offering fresh turkeys and hams for the holiday. Although small, 14- to 16-pound turkeys are already sold out, large and extra-large turkeys are still for sale. A $50 deposit is required for customers to reserve a turkey. They cost $7.99 a pound.

Center-sliced holiday ham between 3 and 5 pounds is also available. It costs $14.99 a pound plus a $35 deposit. A Thanksgiving turkey brine costs $15. According to the farm's website, a reminder email will be sent to customers with details of their pickup time and location the week before Thanksgiving.

Out Post Farm

Out Post Farm in Holliston is offering fresh turkeys and individual Thanksgiving dinners. Uncooked turkeys cost $5.29 a pound.

About 5 to 6 pounds of uncooked turkey breast costs $12.99 a pound. A cooked, frozen stuffed turkey breast costs $70. Individual turkey dinners with turkey breast, mashed potatoes, stuffing, butternut squash, gravy and cranberry sauce cost $18.99 each.
