Turkey's 'sea snot' problem
Turkey's Sea of Marmara has a “sea snot” problem
Location: Istanbul
A thick, slimy layer of marine mucilage is spreading across the water
posing a growing threat to marine life and the fishing industry
Location: Gemlik
The organic matter contains a wide variety of microorganisms
and can flourish when nutrient-rich sewage flows into seawater
Experts link the problem to rising sea temperatures caused by climate change
as well as the discharge of untreated sewage into the sea
Location: Off coast of Yalova
(SOUNDBITE) (Turkish) DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKER, TAHSIN CEYLAN, SAYING:
"The only thing to do is not to throw your waste into the sea. We throw our waste there but expect to get our fish and oxygen from there. This is the grave dilemma of humankind. I do not think nature deserves this."
