'We turned out pretty cool': Milton High School's Class of 2023 celebrates graduation

MILTON − The Class of 2023's 269 seniors graduated on Sunday inside Milton High School's packed Copeland Field House. After a long train of students in red gowns entered and took their seats, school committee Chair Elizabeth Carroll greeted those in attendance.

Carroll lauded the class for managing pandemic-related challenges.

"You forged new ways to connect with each other," she said. "You've overcome a lot, and you've accomplished so much. You brought Milton together. Remember all you've been through, all you've learned and all the people who had your back."

Faculty-selected student speaker Meghan Riordan said high school was "an introduction to your own unique stories." Riordan also commented on the pandemic, which affected the bulk of the class's high school years.

"I was worried whether we would turn out semi-normal," she said. "Though I'm somewhat biased, I think we turned out pretty cool."

Riordan encouraged her peers "to be grateful you got to experience these people, this class filled with amazing kids. I hope you choose to be kind; I hope you find good people and keep them close; I hope your journeys treat you well."

Class President Mia Gilmore reflected on taking laps around the school each morning as a freshman before classes.

"It was a way to kill time before school," she said. "Now I want to slow time down."

In her parting words, Gilmore said, "I love you, Class of 2023. I'm so excited to see what you'll accomplish in the future."

Before the presentation of diplomas, Principal Karen Cahill said the Class of 2023 "reminds me that student voice matters, and we need to listen when they speak out."

Cahill added, "This group of students reminds me that I'm a mother first and a principal second. I worry about you, lose sleep over you and encourage you to be your best selves."
