Turtles appear in bays amid Brazil's lockdown

Turtles appear near airport

Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

A loggerhead sea turtle was spotted

in the iconic Guanabara Bay

as jet engines have been silenced

with the cancellation of 90% of Brazil's flights

(SOUNDBITE) (Portuguese) LOCAL BIOLOGIST, MARIO MOSCATELLI, SAYING:

"Due to the absence of vessels movement, the absence of humans close to the rocky areas of the coast and with the drastic reduction of planes, these animals are now being seen."

Despite fewer people, boats, and planes

animals are still at risk

from the large amounts of pollution

(SOUNDBITE) (Portuguese) LOCAL BIOLOGIST, MARIO MOSCATELLI, SAYING:

"These images of turtles in water are stained because these beautiful animals end up confusing rubbish, plastic and garbage with food. This can lead to death since the plastic obstruct their digestive tract."
