Tuscaloosa Tops 50K COVID-19 Cases As Hospitalizations Surge

TUSCALOOSA, AL — New COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to climb at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, with the health care provider logging 28 new inpatients on Wednesday, bringing its overall total to 175.

This comes as Tuscaloosa officially topped 50,000 total COVID-19 cases confirmed since the beginning of the pandemic.

Monday's hospitalization total is in line with the statewide surge, both of which are at their highest levels since January 2021. Additionally, it's worth noting that the hospital has logged more than 25 new cases each day this week, as hospitalizations in Tuscaloosa have more than doubled over the last couple of weeks.

DCH Health System also reported 28 inpatients receiving treatment in the hospital's intensive care units on Wednesday — another high not seen since this time last year. Of those patients, 93% are unvaccinated.

To date, 811 inpatients who were positive for COVID-19 have died at DCH. According to the latest data from the Alabama Department of Public Health, 678 of those have been residents of Tuscaloosa County.

What's more, nine Tuscaloosa County residents have died in 2022 thus far after being hospitalized with the virus.

On the vaccination front, the state health department reports that 223,249 doses of the widely-available COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Tuscaloosa County, with 89,747 Tuscaloosa County residents completing their initial two-shot vaccination series.
