‘Tuscan chateau’ estate for sale in California once was a director’s home. Take a peek

The remarkable estate of a once-famous film director has landed on the real estate market in Los Angeles.

The residence was built in 1927 for American golfer Clement Eyer Smoot by architect Henry Harwood Hewitt, who was best known for his work on the Alice Lynch home in L.A. However, the estate was also lived in by British film director and actor in “Frankenstein,” James Whale, a news release says.

While it does have an excellent Hollywood pedigree, the home’s beauty is what stands out the most.

“One-of-a-kind authentic dramatic Old World Tuscan chateau in epic setting on a huge flat hilltop lot in prime Los Feliz; with views of the Griffith Observatory and the wooded hills on one side, and the downtown skyline on the other,” the listing on Sotheby’s International Realty says.

The three-bedroom, four-bathroom, 4,525-square-foot home (which was completely renovated, the release says) plays host to a bunch of different amenities scattered throughout, including:

  • Formal entry

  • French doors

  • Terrace

  • Gazebo

  • Chef’s kitchen

  • Breakfast nook

  • Guest apartment

  • Spa

  • Gardens

  • Fountains

“An unparalleled experience: stunning vintage character floating in the sky!” the listing notes.

The property is held by Richard Yohon of Sotheby’s.
