Tuscarawas County boys basketball scouting reports for 2022-23 season

The following coaches responded to requests for information for the 2022-23 season:

GARAWAY

Coach: Terry Rowe, 7th season at Garaway, 23rd overall

2021-22 record: 22-5 (9-3 IVC), Division III regional runner-up

Returning letter winners: Drew Mullet, 5-foot-9 senior (9.6 ppg, 1st team IVC, H.M. District 5, S.M. East District); Alex Roden, 6-2 senior (12.6 ppg, 1st team IVC, 1st team District 5, 2nd team East District, S.M. All-Ohio); Brady Roden, 6-2 senior (8.7 ppg, 2nd team IVC, 2nd team District 5); Jarett Wallick, 6-2 senior (5 ppg, 5.5 rpg); Logan Yoder, 5-10 senior (8.7 ppg, H.M. IVC, H.M. East District); Jenson Garber, 6-0 junior (4.1 ppg); Gabe Amicone, 6-3 junior; Blaine Raber, 6-0 sophomore.

Newcomers: Keshawn Miller, 6-3 junior; Wyatt Wallick, 5-11 junior; Bronson Speedy, 6-1 sophomore.

Losses: Brendan Chapman and Sam Page.

Coach says: “Many of our core players are getting a late start to the season, due to the success of our football team. Once again our season will begin with many challenging opponents. As always our goals remain the same – improve every day we step in the gym and be playing our best basketball at the end of the season.”

MALVERN

Coach: Dennis Tucci, 473-218 in 29 seasons at Malvern; 567-348 in 39 seasons overall

Assistant coaches: Todd English and Travis Tucci

2021-22 record: 21-5, 12-0 IVC

Returning letter winners: Ja’son Barrino, senior (1.4 ppg, 1.3 rpg, 1.2 apg); Drake Delong, senior (1.2 ppg); Seth Kandel, senior (0.5 ppg); J’Allen Barrino, junior (8.0 ppg, 4.2 apg, 4.3 rpg); Dylan Phillips, junior (6.5 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 1.7 apg); Mitchell Minor, junior (6.2 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 1.1 apg).

Newcomers: Greg Lake, senior; Rodney Smith, sophomore; Drake Hutchison, sophomore; Jared Witherow, sophomore.

Losses: Michael Minor (17 ppg, 7.3 rpg, IVC Player of the Year, District 5 Player of the Year, 1st team East District, 1,332 career points); KJ Thomas (8.3 ppg, 4.1 apg, 1st team All-IVC); Connor Lefevre (7.8 ppg, 2nd team All-IVC); Noah Ball (8.2 ppg); Bryson White (2.0 ppg).

The coach says: “We are looking forward to an interesting season. We lost 5 seniors who have won 42 games in the last 2 years at Malvern. We don’t have any returning player with 200 or more points. However, we do have some young talent. It will take a minute or 2, but I think that eventually, we will have another good team capable of playing for championships.”

CLAYMONT

Coach: Gary Watkins, 5th season

Assistant coaches: Rich Struchen, Chad Lynch, Bailey McBeth and Dave Watkins.

2021-22 record: 4-19

Returning letter winners: Nate Barnabi, senior (4.5 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 0.8 apg); Graydon Mooneyham, senior (6.0 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 0.8 apg); Brody Moreland, junior (6.6 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 1.4 apg, H.M. All-IVC); Jesse Seibert, senior (2.9 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 0.3 apg); Dillon Watkins, junior (3.1 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 0.3 apg).

Newcomers: Koi Preston, senior; Clint Barnhart, junior; Jordan Connor, senior (0.7 ppg, 1.0 rpg, 0.4 apg); Matthew Jackson, junior; Devin Whitman, junior; Drew Fox, sophomore.

Losses: Cory Edwards (missed half the season with injury, 4.0 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 0.7 apg); Keaton Host (missed the season with injury); Connor Lynch (10.3 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1st team All-IVC, 2nd team District 5); Brennan Shaver (limited to 8 games because of injury, 0.6 ppg, 0.6 rpg, 0.3 apg); Cade Watkins (5.6 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.3 apg,, 2nd team All-IVC; H.M. District 5).

The coach says: “We are excited about the upcoming season. Many of the varsity players have spent time working on their skills on the court and in the weight room. We hope to continue to improve with each practice and game. We look forward to seeing how the season progresses.”

INDIAN VALLEY

Coach: Tyrone Miller, 15-7 in 2nd season, 130-110 overall

2021-22 record: 15-7

Returning letter winners: Isaac Klaserner, 6-0 senior; Benaiah Klaserner, 6-0 senior; Brayden Troyer, 5-11 senior; Reese Coulson, 6-2 senior; Tyson Pryor, 6-2 junior; Tanyon McComb, 5-9 junior; Sam Carter, 5-9 junior.

Newcomers: Leo Wenger, 6-1 senior; Xander Heil, 6-0 senior; Johnny Meechan, 6-3 senior; Delaney Phillips, 6-0 junior.

The coach says: “We return seven lettermen from a 15-win team last year. Those seven lettermen, along with our newcomers, should all compete on a daily basis for playing time. This should make for some very good practices. Our success will depend on our ability to defend and buy into our roles. We have beefed up our schedule this year and expect to be challenged every night in the IVC and with our non-conference schedule. We are looking forward to the grind of the season and hope to be playing well in February and March.”

CARROLLTON

Coach: Mike Auckerman, 5th season

2021-22 record: 4-19

Returning letter winners: Jaxon Rinkes, 5-11 senior (14.2 ppg, 52.5% FG, 34.2% 3-pointers, 70% FT); Brock Smith, 6-1 senior (6.1 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 4.2 apg); Cadyn Smith, 6-3 senior (4.4 ppg, 4.2 rpg); Micah Barkan, 5-11 senior (4.1 ppg, 2.1 rpg); Lincoln Mallernee, 6-0 junior (8.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 81.2% FT, 26 3-pointers; Carter Higgins, 5-8 junior (3.2 ppg, 19 3-pointers); Luke Allison, 6-7 junior (2.2 ppg, 51% FG).

Newcomers: Ethan Benner, 5-9 senior; John Birong, 6-1 senior; Massimo Petrangeli, 6-1 senior; Cayden Rininger, 6-0 senior; Carter Maroszkia, 5-10 junior; Andrew Birong, 6-3 sophomore.

The coach says: “I really like the energy and passion that this group plays with and they really communicate well. They bring it every day and we will compete every night. Our depth will be a big key to our success and we will improve greatly throughout the season. We want to be playing our best basketball in Feb/March.”
