DOVER ‒ Reb Billman, president of the Tuscarawas County Fair board, was all smiles after the market livestock auction on Thursday set a new sale record for the fifth year in a row.

"I guess the reaction you would get from me you would have to see because it's a great big smile on my face. I don't know how to explain it. I don't know how to thank the people enough. It's unbelievable," he said Friday.

The 2022 sale amount total was $1,337,963. Last year's sale brought in $1,260,286, while the 2020 sale amount was $748,195.05. Online auction bidding has brought in more buyers.

"Hog prices were up tremendously, so that helps out a lot," said Tina Armstrong, junior fair sale committee coordinator. "We were down in numbers as far as animals go."

There were at least 50 fewer animals sold than in 2021, but prices were up across the board.

Billman was grateful for the community support. "There's a lot of big corporate buyers that do a lot of support, but our small businesses are just amazing in the amount of support that they give. I just hope that the families realize that."
