Tuscarawas County foundations announce grants

Tuscarawas County charitable organizations recently benefited from grants awarded by The Blair & Anna Zimmerman Foundation and The Jeanne Souers Garcia Foundation.

The Zimmerman Foundation was established by the late Blair E. & Anna L. Zimmerman, long-time Bolivar residents, to provide charitable assistance for capital expenses to qualified tax-exempt organizations in Tuscarawas County. The foundation awarded more than $24,400 in grants to the following organizations:

  • Village of Bolivar, $6,500, to develop a small park downtown that will include a statue, created by students at Tuscarawas Valley Local Schools, depicting the history of Bolivar.

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters, $6,500, to assist with the purchase of a new printer/copier for daily operations and to prepare program materials in-house.

  • Trumpet in the Land, Ohio Outdoor Historical Drama Association, $5,000, for repair or replacement of light towers at the amphitheater.

  • Mineral City Area Historical Society, $2,690, to purchase materials to repair and upgrade their new display space in the Mineral City Council Building.

  • The Salvation Army, Dover/New Philadelphia, $2,000, to purchase an education-based gaming system for their Learning Zone after-school and summer programs.

  • Tuscarawas County Literacy Program, $1,000, for materials for the One Book, One Community project.

  • Dover Public Library, $719, for a customized, free-standing charging station for library patrons.

The foundation committee will review grant applications again in January 2023. All grant requests must be submitted by Dec. 1, 2022, to Zimmerman Foundation, c/o Huntington Bank, 4481 Munson Ave. NW, Suite 200, Canton, OH 44718

The Souers-Garcia Foundation was established by the late Jeanne Souers Garcia to assist qualified tax-exempt organizations in greater Tuscarawas County with charitable, religious, scientific, literary, or educational purposes. Souers-Garcia grants were awarded to:

  • East Central Ohio Education Service Center, $3,000, to purchase books to be given to families at the November 2022 Reading Festival.

  • Salvation Army in Dover/New Philadelphia, $2,000, for on-going social services to provide for basic needs of Tuscarawas County residents, including assistance with food, and emergency rent and utility payments.

  • United Way of Tuscarawas County, Inc., $2,000, for First Call for Help, a service to provide emergency assistance vouchers for utilities and housing for residents.

  • Tuscarawas County Literacy Coalition, $1,000, to purchase books for the One Book One Community Project.

The Garcia-Souers Foundation awards grants annually in June. All requests must be received by May 31, 2023, at Souers-Garcia Foundation, c/o Huntington Bank, 4481 Munson Ave. NW, Suite 200, Canton, OH 44718.
