NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Tuscarawas County Public Library System will hold its first free Sustainable Living Faire from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at its main library. Guests can meet local vendors and organizations as they explore homesteading, traditional skills and renewable resources.

Learn what it takes to create an energy-efficient home from solar panels to geothermal energy from Randi Pokladnik. Rural Action will be teaching guests mushroom inoculation, forest farming, and how to apply for energy-efficient tax credits. Hand Hewn Farms will demonstrate how to butcher the front shoulder of a hog.

Certified master herbalist Julia Brown, owner of Simpler Thyme, will discuss planning your kitchen herb garden. Sunny Hive Orchard will be available to discuss beekeeping. Boy Scout Troop 84 will provide a knot-tying demonstration, and the OSU Extension Office will lead a class on canning and preserving.

Fundraiser for the working uninsured

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The United Way of Tuscarawas County is hosting Casino Royale, a fundraiser to benefit the Tuscarawas Clinic for the Working Uninsured, from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Kent State University Performing Arts Center. It will feature silent and live auctions, casino games, hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.

Tickets are $50 and available at www.tuscunitedway.org/events or by calling 330-364-1853. All proceeds benefit the clinic, which serves Tuscarawas County residents who are employed without insurance. The clinic is at 420 Reeves Ave., Suite D, Dover.

The nonprofit Tuscarawas Clinic for the Working Uninsured is staffed by volunteer physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners and volunteers. Anyone in Tuscarawas County ages 18-64 who is employed and lacks medical insurance can contact the clinic at 330-364-1853 to complete a medical and financial assessment for eligibility. Women’s Success Series upcoming

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The first session of the 2024 Women’s Success Series will be from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. March 1 at Kent State University at Tuscarawas in the Science and Advanced Technology Center. Amy Smith, the general manager of WJER Radio, is the featured speaker.

Each year, the Women’s Success Series features three women who have enjoyed a measure of success in Tuscarawas County. The sessions also include networking opportunities and a book discussion or TED Talk. Fire department to hold fundraiser dinner

SCIO − The Scio Volunteer Fire Department will hold an all-you-can-eat roast beef dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 25. Price is $15 for adults, $8 for younger than 10. Eat in or carry out.

Natalie Stokes wins spelling bee

ZOARVILLE − The winner of Tuscarawas Valley Local Schools 21st Spelling Bee held Feb. 7 in the Middle High School Performing Arts Center was seventh grader Natalie Stokes, and the runner-up was eighth grader Henry Dixon. Natalie's winning word in the 10th round was Vaseline. Students will compete March 2 at the Regional Final Bee at the Kent State Stark campus in North Canton.

Tapestries of Tuscarawas County reception Saturday

DOVER − A reception for the unveiling of the sixth edition of Tapestries of Tuscarawas County will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Dover Public Library. It is a literary and oral history journal published annually that features work by people with connections to Tuscarawas County.

Contributing authors will have the opportunity to read portions of their work at the event. The top submissions in three categories will be awarded a cash prize. 'Letter from Birmingham Jail’

DOVER − The Dover Public Library will celebrate Black History Month by hosting a public reading of “Letter from Birmingham Jail” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote the letter in 1963 while being held in a jail cell in Birmingham, Alabama. It was in response to religious leaders who criticized his activism during the Civil Rights movement.

Murder mystery dinner is March 2, 3

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Friends of Tuscarawas County Public Library’s will host its annual murder mystery dinner at 6:30 p.m. March 2 and 1 p.m. March 3. The Friends of the Main Library is a 501(c)(3) organization that raises funds for special projects at the library.

The cost is $50 and tickets must be purchased in advance at the main library. Reservations are required by Feb. 26.

A buffet-style dinner from Kathy’s Catering includes baked chicken, roast beef, seven-layer salad, broccoli salad, parsley potatoes, Johnny Marzetti, rolls, and a choice of four desserts.

Ticketholders are encouraged to dress in their favorite detective costumes. After dinner, guests will be able to ask questions to help determine who the culprit is, and those at each table will put forth theories after the interrogations. The table with the best guess will be the winner.
