Dog Days of Summer event Saturday

DOVER – Dog Days of Summer event will be 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, on the trails of Norma Johnson Center, 3645 Conservation Drive. It will begin at the Conservation Drive trailhead where a registration table will be set up.

Attendees can earn free tickets for attending and hiking with a pet. Those tickets will be used for chances to win the donated door prizes for this event. Ticket winners will be drawn at 10:30 a.m.

New Towne Mall hosts school-supplies drive

NEW PHILADELPHIA – New Towne Mall guests can donate supplies for the Tusc for Teachers supply drive through Aug. 27. Help local teachers and students by bringing supplies to the drop-off bin at the center court near the fountain. Community members can see a complete supply list by visiting Newsymom.com/tuscforteachers or newtownemall.com.

From 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 27, there will be a wrap up party at the mall to celebrate teachers, with the Michael Mage Magic Show at 2 p.m.. This will also be an opportunity for teachers to stop by and collect necessary supplies. After the event, any remaining supplies will be available for any local teacher in need.

Crisis Intervention Team refresher course set

NEW PHILADELPHIA − A Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) refresher course will be Sept. 29, hosted by Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell and the CIT Steering Committee.

This 8-hour refresher training will provide law enforcement and other first responders who have previously graduated from the 40-hour CIT course at least one year ago on updated information and resources in the community as it relates to crisis intervention for behavioral health and special populations. The focus of the training will be on refreshing and updating CIT-certified first responders on de-escalation and community resources. MWCD launches new scholarship program

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) is offering a Law Enforcement Scholarship Program through Buckeye Career Center. This program is designed to recognize and support people pursuing a career in law enforcement.

The MWCD is partnering with the Buckeye Career Center Friends of Adult Education Foundation to financially assist adult students in Buckeye Career Center’s Ohio Peace Office Training Academy (OPOTA). Eligible candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Application to Buckeye Career Center’s full-time Ohio Peace Office Training Academy (OPOTA) program and enrollment requirements:

  • Register with Buckeye Career Center’s Student Services

  • Scholarship funds shall be used for tuition and/or fees for the OPOTA at Buckeye Career Center, up to and including the full cost of the program

  • Recipient(s) must exhaust other sources of scholarships or grants before being eligible to receive funds from the MWCD Law Enforcement Scholarship

  • Applications for the scholarship must be submitted by Aug. 30

Once students complete their required OPOTA training, they are eligible to pursue a career in law enforcement, which includes the possibility of becoming a MWCD Ranger.

School board meeting date changed

CADIZ − The Harrison Hills City Board of Education has changed the August meeting date from Aug. 31 to Aug. 30. The meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the Harrison Central auditorium.

Welfare Reform Committee to meet

NEW PHILADELPHIA – A Tuscarawas County Welfare Reform Committee meeting will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in conference room A at Tuscarawas County Job and Family Services, 389 16th St. SW.

Red Cross blood drive Friday

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The American Red Cross will have a blood donation drive from noon to 6 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, 201 W. High Ave. NW. Those who give in August will get a $10 e-gift card to a movie merchant of their choice. Details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/Movie.

Funding available for Black-led, Black-serving organizations in Appalachian

The African American Community Fund (AACF) in partnership with the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO) is accepting grant applications from Black-led and Black-serving nonprofit and public organizations throughout Appalachian Ohio through Sept. 12.

AACF and FAO’s I’m a Child of Appalachia Fund, with support from the AEP Foundation, will award grants across five areas essential to creating and sustaining transformative change: arts and culture, community and economic development, education, environmental stewardship, and health and human services.

AACF, with funding from the U.S. Bank Foundation, is also accepting capacity-building funding requests designed to help Black-led and Black-serving organizations best meet the needs of those they serve by expanding services, enhancing program quality and/or improving operational efficiencies. Funding requests for capacity building may include but are not limited to:

  • Professional development and training opportunities

  • Activities designed to increase staff engagement and retention

  • Technology and equipment upgrades
