Foundation accepting grant applications

CANTON − The deadline for submitting grant requests to the Haman Family Foundation is Aug. 31 for grants to be awarded in September.

The Haman Family Foundation was established in 1993 by the late Robert L. and Freda I. Haman, lifelong residents of the area, to help qualified charities in Tuscarawas County. Grants are awarded primarily for capital improvement projects and equipment, as well as some programs and services.

Registration open for Fit for Life

DOVER – Registration is open for the fall session of the Fit for Life program, which will be offered at the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St., by Dr. Timothy McKnight and his staff from the Trinity Hospital Twin City Medical Center.

McKnight will conduct the 60-minute classes from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays for 12 weeks in the library’s community room. Participants can attend in person or virtually. Lectures are released within a private Facebook page, then the classes meet each Tuesday. The course will run Sept. 5 through Nov. 21.

McKnight will address such topics as customized nutrition and fitness plans, stress management, cardiovascular fitness, food labels, flexibility and strength fitness, disease prevention and healthy aging.

Free concert Saturday in Minerva

MINERVA − Minerva’s last free concert in the park for this summer will feature DJ’s Rock & Roll Big Band, playing tunes from the '50s to the '70s, from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday on the Municipal Park stage.

Bring chairs or blankets. In case of rain, the concert will be held at the Roxy Theatre, 114 N. Market St.

Foster care pre-service classes set

NEW PHILADELPHIA − Tuscarawas County Job & Family Services is offering free classes to community members who would like to become foster parents. There are only three classes that prospective parents are required to attend.

Classes will be held at Tuscarawas County JFS, 389 16th St. SW, on the following dates:

  • Sept. 2, 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

  • Sept. 16, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

  • Sept. 23, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Miss Clayland applications available

UHRICHSVILLE – Applications are available for the Miss Clayland Scholarship competition to be held Sept. 30, at Claymont High School. Contestants will compete in five phases of competition; private interview, evening wear, on-stage question, talent and fitness. Scholarships totaling more than $3,000 will be awarded, and the winner will have the opportunity to compete at the Miss Ohio competition in June 2024. Contestants must be between the ages of 18 and 28.

StoryWalk celebration is Saturday

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Tuscarawas County Public Library System will unveil a permanent StoryWalk in the pollinator garden at the New Philadelphia Southside Community Park, 1320 Oldtown Valley Road SE, with a ribbon cutting and celebration from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The celebration will include a craft, face painting, cookies and free books for kids. No registration is required. For more information, call the library at 330-364-4474.

The attraction encourages visitors to experience reading, participate in physical activity and explore nature together. It is a gift to the New Philadelphia community from Brian Huprich, a former New Philadelphia resident. It's tribute to his parents, Ken and Carol Huprich, who are residents of the southside of New Philadelphia for more than 50 years, and their ongoing advocacy for books and reading.

The first book to be displayed in the StoryWalk will be one of the Huprich family’s favorite picture books, “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds. A new book will be displayed on a regular basis.

Woodstock program at library

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Tuscarawas County Public Library System will host local actor and historian Chris Hart in his first-person presentation titled “Woodstock” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Main Library, 121 Fair Ave. NW.

Hart will portray Max Yasgur as he tells the story of the leasing of his dairy farm to the 1969 Woodstock Festival. Register for this event at www.tusclibrary.org or by calling the library at 330-364-4474.

Community center to host sale

STONE CREEK – Tunnel Hill Community Center, 112 E. Maple St., will host a yard sale from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, featuring vendors with handmade crafts and vintage, old and used items.

Spaces are available for rent inside for $5 with an 8-foot provided table, or outside for $10 (no tables provided). Text 330-795-5057 (Pauline). The kitchen will be open both days with sandwiches, snacks and drinks. The Jim Davidson Band will provide music from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. Friday and from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday. Frontier Power holds annual meeting

COSHOCTON − Approximately 700 members attended the recent annual Frontier Power and Frontier Propane meetings.

Elected trustees via mail voting were announced. For Frontier Power, Ann Gano will represent District BII of Tuscarawas County and Tim Dickerson will represent District D of Coshocton County. Both are incumbents. For Frontier Propane, Jerrod Allison will represent District A of Coshocton, Licking and Muskingum counties and incumbent David P. Mizer will represent District B of Holmes, Tuscarawas, Guernsey and Knox counties.

Upcoming meetings

∎ The Claymont City Board of Education will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday, at the administration office. ∎ The Board of Revision will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday, in the Tuscarawas County auditor's conference room.
