Fort Laurens to host primitive fire-starting workshop

BOLIVAR – Fort Laurens Museum will host a primitive fire-starting class at Midwest Native Skills Institute from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Midwest Native Skills Institute is an outdoor survival school recently selected byAmerican Survival Guide as one of the top five schools in the U.S. to learn wilderness self-reliance and survival skills. The workshop features guided instruction by Tom Laskowski, the institute director and founder.

Limited spaces are available. Preregistration is required by Tuesday. To register, visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “Fort Laurens.” The cost for the workshop is $15, due at the time of registration.

Jammin’ Food Truck Fest in Dennison

DENNISON – The Dennison Railroad Depot Museum Systems will host the annual Jammin’ Food Truck Fest from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in a new location on Center Street in front of the Depot. This event will have a variety of food trucks, several non-food vendors, kids’ activities, and live music by Saxy Rob from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tequila Mary from 2 to 4 p.m., and Randy Velez from 5 to 7 p.m. with DJ services in between from Hitchcock Sound.

Dover Township trustees change meeting date

DOVER TWP. – The next regular session meeting of the Dover Township trustees has been moved from Sept. 5 to Friday at 7 a.m. due to a scheduling conflict.

New permanent exhibit opens at Ernest Warther Museum

DOVER – The Ernest Warther Museum & Gardens, 331 Karl Ave., will open a new permanent exhibit, the Dale E. Warther Tribute Exhibit: Forged Through Generations, on Friday. It includes unique and distinguished knives hand-forged by four generations of the Warther Family.

The exhibit also honors more than 40 men and women who served in World War II and carried Ernest Warther-made Commando Knives. More than 150 knives made by four generations of the Warther family are featured in the exhibit, spanning over 107 years. For more information, visit www.thewarthermuseum.com.

Author Rob Schwartz at Dover library Thursday

DOVER – The Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St., will host Rob Schwartz at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Community Room as he talks about his father’s posthumous book “The Wisdom of Morrie: Living and Aging Creatively and Joyfully.”

Morrie Schwartz was a professor of sociology at Brandeis University and therapist at Greenhouse in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He had succumbed to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis when Mitch Albom published “Tuesdays with Morrie” in 1997. The book was about a series of visits that Albom had made to his former sociology professor.

Sept. 9 blood-screening event

DOVER – The Fall Community Health Profile 2023, a low-cost comprehensive blood-screening event hosted by Dover-New Philadelphia Kiwanis Club and New Philadelphia Rotary Club, will be from 6 to 11 a.m. Sept. 9 at Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital.

Appointments are required and are accepted online and by telephone. To make an appointment online, visit the Rotary Club’s website at www.newphiladelphiarotary.com and complete the registration form. To make appointments by phone, call 330-308-3599 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

The blood-screening event covers a wide range of health indicators at a discounted price and is offered as part of a fundraising project to support the many community programs of the two clubs.

The blood-profile testing includes diabetes, cholesterol, anemia, thyroid function, liver and kidney disease. The cost is $45. For an additional $15, men 50 and older can receive a PSA prostate screen. Payment is made to the clubs and is by cash or check only Sept. 9.

Union Hospital’s phlebotomy staff will draw the blood samples and testing will be completed in the hospital’s laboratory. A printed report will be sent to the address provided by each participant, and this will include all test results.

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 1077 will have a pancake breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 3 at Harry Clever Airport. Visitors can view airplanes and tour a fully equipped and armed Vietnam-era Huey UH-1 gunship. Menu includes pancakes, eggs sausage, juice and coffee.
