Program about Warther family history is Monday

DOVER – Author David Warther will present his book “Working in Ivory: The Story of the Warther Carvers” at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Dover Public Library In the book, Warther tells the Warther family history back to the early 1800s. The story especially relates to the carvings the family is known for and the knife factory. The story includes Dover history.

Civil War Round Table meeting

DOVER – The Tuscarawas Valley Civil War Round Table will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Community Room of the Dover Public Library. Historian Kevin Wood will share an account of Abraham Lincoln’s life, from his childhood on the frontier to the 12 turbulent years from 1855 to 1865.

Atwood Fall Festival photo contest

MINERAL CITY – The Atwood Area Fall Festival annual photo contest will be Oct. 6-8, at Atwood Lake Park, managed by the local photo club, Focus Point. The photography categories are Old, Insects and Walk a mile in my shoes. The entry fee is $4 per photograph entered (cash only); limit of three photos per person; one in each category.

Area older adults can enter art contest

WALNUT HILLS – Walnut Hills Retirement Community is seeking entries for its annual art show for older adults to be held in Walnut Creek on Oct. 6 and 7.

The 2023 Creativity is Timeless contest is open to amateur artists 55 or older who reside in Holmes County or within a two-mile radius of the county line, including the Sugarcreek, Baltic, Dundee, and Wilmot areas.

Artists may submit up to three entries, and there is no entry fee. All art must have been completed when the artist was 55 or older. The art categories are paintings and drawings; photography; quilts and wall hangings; other soft crafts (crochet, knitting, and other needlework); woodworking; other hard crafts (stained glass, ceramics, etc.); and miscellaneous (jewelry, wreaths, stamping, scrapbooking, and other crafts).

Entry forms must be submitted by Sept. 22. The entry forms are available at Walnut Hills on Olde Pump Street in Walnut Creek, the Garaway Senior Center in Sugarcreek, and the Darb Snyder Senior Center in Millersburg. Entry forms can also be submitted via the Walnut Hills website, www.walnuthillsliving.org

This year, the contest will be held in conjunction with a Fall Festival on the Walnut Hills campus. In addition to the art exhibit from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 7, there will be hayrides, family photos, food, and and games.

New Philadelphia native publishes book

NEW PHILADELPHIA − New Philadelphia native Paul Swartz has published a book, "Twin Populist Reform Warriors 500 Years Apart: Martin Luther & Donald Trump – Astonishing Similarities." According to Swartz, both men were populists as the dictionary defines those supporting the concerns of ordinary people who felt oppressed and disenfranchised by the privileged elite establishment. The book, published by Gatekeeper Press, is available through book vendors such as Barnes and Noble, Amazon and other retailers.

Swartz graduated from New Philadelphia High School, Wittenberg University and Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1968 as a pastor. He resides in Carmel, Indiana.

Fawcett promoted at bank

DOVER − Tracy Fawcett has been promoted to manager of the financial center with First Federal Community Bank on West High Avenue.

She began her banking career in 1989 and previously served customers at the financial center from 2006 to 2007 before returning this year as the senior financial service representative, assisting throughout the bank’s eight financial centers. A native of Carrollton, she continues to reside in Carroll County.

Highway Patrol open house

NEW PHILADELPHIA − In celebration of the Ohio State Highway Patrol's 50th anniversary, the New Philadelphia Post will host an open house. Community members can tour the facility and interact with troopers and staff.

Also to mark the occasion the patrol is partnering with Dolly Patron's Imagination Library of Ohio to educate families about this free book program. For more information on the program visit ohioimaginationlibrary.org.

Meeting canceled

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The September meeting of the Planning Commission has been canceled. The next meeting will be in October.

YMCA board members selected

DOVER − Six individuals have been selected to serve on the board for the Tuscarawas County YMCA. Fran Brogan of Dover, Perci Garner III of Dover, and Amy Smith of Canton were re-elected to second terms. Jeff Bray of New Philadelphia, Scott Heil of New Philadelphia and Pete Kandis of Magnolia were elected to a first term.

Each will serve a 3-year term, which begins in September.

Alcohol, Drug Addition, Mental Health Services Board receives funding

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Alcohol, Drug Addition, Mental Health Services Board of Tuscarawas and Carroll counties received $291,595 through the American Rescue Plan Act. The funding will be used for four projects:

● A physical and behavioral health urgent care center to open in the fall in Tuscarawas County under the management of SpringVale Health Center.● Renovation of space within the Tuscarawas County Jail for a dedicated meeting and classroom to address behavior, education and substance abuse related issues.● To provide evidence-based trainings to clinicians and first responders to develop a Critical Incident Stress Management team● To train clinicians in Trauma Response Team Foundations, to develop a team to offer crisis intervention during catastrophic, traumatic events.

David Warther Carvings to host free tours

SUGARCREEK ‒ David Warther Carvings will be holding an event Saturday called Museum Day Live, in which it will offer free tours to the general public. The museum will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last tour starting at or before 4 p.m. The carvings created by Warther depict the "History of the Ship" from ancient Egypt, 3000 B.C., to the present day, and collectively form an artistic and highly educational exhibit. Warther is the grandson of the well-known Earnest "Mooney" Warther. The museum is located at 1775 State Route 39, Sugarcreek.
