Ice cream social Saturday at the McCook House

CARROLLTON – The McCook House, 15 S. Lisbon St., will host an ice cream social from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. Bring your own chairs. Reservations are appreciated but not required; call 330-437-9715 or 330-627-3345.

Children's activities at Dover library

DOVER – The Children’s Department of the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St., will offer a Touch a Truck event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The program will also have a new visitor, "The Bee," a transformer who will visit with kids and be available for photos. The Friends of the Library will offer a free lunch of hot dogs, chips and a drink. The library will have truck novelties for the kids.

Lego/Builders club will be on the second Thursday of each month with the first meeting at 4 p.m. Sept. 14. Book club for kids ages 8-12 will be held the third Tuesday of each month, with the first meeting at 4 p.m. Sept. 19. Each participant will get a book, and will discuss chapters read and participate in a fun activity each month. A book club for children ages 5-7 will begin in October. A new club, STEAM Team, will be at 4 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month, with the first meeting Sept. 27. There is no sign up for each club until the first meeting. All children can come to the first meeting for more details.

Irish singer/songwriter at the Roxy Theatre on Sept. 10

MINERVA − Minerva’s Roxy Theatre will host a performance by Irish singer/songwriter Enda Reilly from 7 to 8 p.m. next Sunday.

Tour a tree farm Saturday

NEWCOMERSTOWN −The Schmuki family will welcome visitors to its 238-acre Certified Tree Farm from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday to learn more about managing a forest. Professional foresters will lead free walking tours at the Post Boy Tree Farm south of the house at 17395 Starkey Hollow Road SW. This Certified Tree Farm was selected from among 1,200 Certified Tree Farms as the 2023 Ohio Tree Farm of the Year.

The tours will highlight woodland management activities including discussions on pollinators, tree planting, fence posts, persimmon, butternut, locust, Chestnut Oak and White Oak trees, as well as turkey calls, barn restoration and Oxford Township history.

Trumpet in the Land to perform 'Assassins'

NEW PHILADELPHIA − Trumpet in the Land Amphitheatre pavilion, 1600 Trumpet Dr. NE, will stage the Sondheim & Weidman classic "Assassins" at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

"Assassins" includes strong language and strong content and is not recommended for small children. Cleveland Browns NFL championship, 'Golden Girls' are library program topics

Tuscarawas County Democratic Party's Executive Committee to meet

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Tuscarawas County Democratic Party's Executive Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Sept. 12 at Democratic Headquarters, 1260 Monroe St. NW.

In addition to the regular business meeting members will be voting on a proposal to (1) amend the Party’s Constitution and By-Laws and (2) nominating and electing a person to the position of Executive Committee Secretary. The unexpired term of office for the position of Executive Committee Secretary will commence Sept. 12, 2023, and conclude on the day of the May 2026 Primary Election.

Spaghetti dinner to benefit fire department

SOMERDALE − The Fairfield Township Volunteer Fire Department will have a spaghetti dinner from 11 to 3 p.m. Sept. 10 at the fire station, at 6288 Firehouse St.

The dinner includes spaghetti with meat sauce, salad bar, bread, beverage and a choice of dessert. The cost for the dinner is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 4-12, free for children 3 younger. Salad bar only is $7. All proceeds benefit the Fairfield Township Volunteer Fire Department.

Civil War School Day and Civil War Reenactment at Historic Zoar Village

ZOAR – Historic Zoar Village will host the Civil War School Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 15. Public, private and homeschooled students can learn about life on the battlefield and the home front. Throughout the village, historical interpreters in period dress will show students how Separatists in Zoar and citizens in the Union lived during the conflict.

The cost for this event is $7 per student and children younger than 4 are free. One adult per group is free, each additional adult is $7, and all teachers are admitted free. All proceeds go toward the preservation and educational efforts of Historic Zoar Village. Reservations are required. Groups can register by calling 330-874-3011 or emailing tshrum@zca.org.

This event kicks off the Zoar’s Civil War Reenactment from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 16 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 17. The reenactors will portray soldiers in a recreation of the Battle of Chickamauga.

Annual Camp Tuscazoar pig roast fundraiser Saturday and Sept. 10

ZOARVILLE − Camp Tuscazoar will host its 34th annual Pig Roast fundraiser from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 10 at the camp dining hall. This fundraiser is open to the public. The proceeds provide resources for maintenance, repair and construction projects at the camp.

The pig roast menu will include roast pork, barbecued chicken, parsley potatoes, corn, cornbread and butter,applesauce, beverages and assorted desserts, including our popular pig cookies. If requested, the meal can beserved in a carryout container, and outdoor seating will be available at picnic tables.
