Program planned about fracking

DOVER – Retired research chemist and teacher Randi Pokladnik will present a program called "How Fracking will harm Ohio's Parks and Forests" in the Dover Public Library’s community room, 525 N. Walnut St., at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. She will talk about all the ways that fracking in or near Ohio’s state parks and forests will harm these ecosystems. According to her research, fracking will have negative effects on many aspects of the area: the surface water, trees and plants, wildlife, fish and the daily functioning of surrounding communities.

On Jan. 6, Gov. Mike DeWine signed House Bill 507, which requires state agencies in Ohio to lease agency-owned or controlled oil and gas resources for development. This bill allows oil and gas companies to nominate land parcels within citizen-owned state parks and forests to obtain fracking leases.

Pokladnik has an associate degree in environmental engineering, a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in environmental studies. Register at www.doverlibrary.org/events or call the library at 330-343-6123.
