Reeves Foundation grant deadline

DOVER – Local nonprofits that address the needs of the community have until July 26 to apply for funding through the The Reeves Foundation. Requests of all sizes are considered, but organizations must be 501(c)(3) certified. Emphasis is placed on capital-type expenditures rather than on operating funds.

Murder mystery Wednesday at library

DOVER – Mystery at Magnolia Gardens will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, at the Dover Public Library on North Walnut Street, where groups will will discover who poisoned the director of the Magnolia Gardens. Teams will unravel some other suspicious activity at the gardens while they review evidence, interview suspects, create a murder board and solve puzzles.

Little Girls’ Princess Tea at the Reeves Museum

DOVER – The Reeves Museum will host its annual Little Girls’ Tea at 11 a.m. Aug. 1 and 5. Activities include princess stories, and arts and crafts led by a Fairy Grandmother in the Carriage House of the museum, 325 E. Iron Ave.

History series at library

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Tuscarawas County Public Library System’s Stories from the Past: Living History series continues at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the main library, 121 Fair Ave. NW, with a presentation on Dover’s Torch Murder of 1934. Historian Noel Porier will recount the gangland killing that took place in Tuscarawas County in the winter of 1934.

On July 25, local actor Chris Hart will discuss strange events and coincidences that occurred during the Civil War, including tales of strange deaths, chance meetings and unsolved mysteries.

The series will conclude Aug. 20 with information on Woodstock. Hart will portray Max Yasgur to tell the story of the leasing of his dairy farm to the 1969 Woodstock Festival.

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Central Ohio will present Ask a Big at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the main library.

The program will be a frequently-asked-question session for those interested in becoming a mentor to area youth. BBBS requires a minimum of four hours a month from volunteer mentors, which can be done through their community- or school-based programs.

A current mentor and staff member from BBBS will be on hand to answer questions about services and programs provided to youth in Tuscarawas, Carroll and Harrison counties. They will discuss camp opportunities, individual assistance, and resource connections.

Farmers market starts Tuesday

NEW PHILADELPHIA – New Philadelphia’s Farmers Market will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays through Aug. 30 in the main parking lot of Tuscora Park. Vendors will sell their produce in a designated area at the south end of the main parking lot with the remaining parking lot available for customers.

Computer or software training

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Free computer or software training classes are taught by staff from the Tuscarawas County Public Library System at the main library in New Philadelphia.

Upcoming classes include:

  • Google Photos, Tuesday at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m.: Learn how to organize, store, and share your photos, and videos with this free tool. A Google account is required.

  • Beyond Books: Library Apps, Thursday at noon: Explore what apps the library has to offer for free with your library card. Bring your own device to follow along and discover apps for more than just books.

  • Beyond Books: Mango Languages, July 27 at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m.: Learn a new language. Courses are available for a computer or mobile app.

The library also offers one-on-one training for those with specific questions about accessing and downloading the library’s free digital resources, including eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, music, TV shows, and comics. Call 330-364-4474 to schedule a 30-minute appointment with staff.

Strasburg Lions Club Car Show is Saturday

STRASBURG – The Strasburg Lions Club car show will take place from noon to 3p.m. Saturday, in the parking lot at ProVia-Strasburg. Proceeds will be used for student scholarships and community improvement projects. Registration is 10 a.m. until noon. The entry fee is $10.

The first 100 cars entered will receive dash plaques. Awards will be presented in 11 categories, with one presented for the best of show and one for president’s choice. Car show participants should park in the main parking lot at ProVia, and spectators should park in lots on either side of the building.

Disc jockey Spikeman will provide music and and food trucks will be on site. Miller’s Creamery ice cream will also be available.

Medicare program Tuesday

DOVER – Robert Fenn with Social Security Administration and Susan Saunders with the Ohio Department of Insurance will present information about determining eligibility for Medicare, enrolling and choosing the best available options at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the Dover Library.
