Nominations sought for Distinguished Alumni Award

BOWERSTON – The Conotton Valley Alumni Association is accepting nominations for its Distinguished Alumni Award to be presented Sept. 9 at its annual alumni dinner. The nomination form is on the school website: cvul.org under quicklinks on the Alumni Association page. Nomination forms must be turned in by Aug. 1.

Encampment, Harriet Tubman reenactor at McCook House

CARROLLTON −The 29th OVI Company Encampment will take place at the McCook House, 15 S. Lisbon St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Reenactor Edie Murphy will portray Harriet Tubman at 11, and John Barnett will speak on the forgotten General, Benjamin Potts, at 1. Homemade pie with ice cream will be served. Program offered to help smokers quit

DOVER – The Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St., is partnering with Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital to offer a program called Freedom from Smoking, which was developed by the American Lung Association. A certified facilitator from CCUH will conduct each of the sessions in this 7-week program.

Participants will learn a structured, systematic approach to quitting smoking. Participants will attend weekly sessions every Tuesday from July 11 to August 22 as well as a special session Aug. 3. The 90-minute sessions will begin at 5:30 in the community room of the library. The cost is $10. To register, call the hospital at 330-602-0799.

Science Camp starts July 17

DOVER – Survivor Science Camp will be offered at Camp Tuscazoar 6066 Boy Scout Rd NE, from July 17 to 21. Students entering grades 2 through 4 will attend from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. Students entering grades 5 through 8 will attend from noon to 2:30 p.m. Activities will be varied between the grade-level groups. Campers will develop their inquiry skills while participating in varying activities that have a link to studying outdoors and problem solving. Biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science activities will be integrated.

TuscParks to host butterfly exhibit at Norma Johnson Center

DOVER – TuscParks will host a butterfly exhibit open to the public starting Wednesday and goingthrough July 16. The free exhibit will be held under the picnic shelter on ConservationDrive off of old state Route 39 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Fran LeMaster’s traveling butterfly exhibit “All A Flutter” allows visitors to step inside the enclosure and view several native Ohio butterflies up close. Chrysalis will also be on display and hatchings will occur throughout the week inside the exhibit. Free crafts and face painting will be available. For a fee, visitors can purchase certain crafts and monarch chrysalis throughout the week while supplies last. Donations will be accepted at the door. Children younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

The Norma Johnson Center is on state Route 39 three miles west of Interstate 77 Dover Exit 83 and six miles east ofSugarcreek. Oil and gas leasing subject of meeting

DOVER – Ron Carlton will discuss the latest developments and his observations regarding oil and gas leasing in the Utica/Point Pleasant shale at the East Central Ohio Forestry Association (ECOFA) meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St.

ECOFA is an organization of people interested in improving their woodlands and in forestry-related topics.

Big Brothers Big Sisters program July 10

DOVER – Beverly Pearch, president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Central Ohio, and Dan Warther, owner of Warther Woodworking and a Big Brother, will be at the Dover Public Library community room, 525 N. Walnut St., at 6:30 p.m. July 10 to present “Match Madness.” Their goal is to engage 15 adult mentors for 15 children who are waiting for a Big in their life. Information will be shared regarding the services and programs that are provided to youth in Tuscarawas and Carroll Counties, such as school- and community-based mentoring, camp opportunities, individual assistance and resource connection.

First football preview slated for Aug. 1

DOVER ‑ The Tuscarawas County Sports Hall of Fame is sponsoring its first Tuscarawas County High School Football Preview Night on Aug. 1 at the Tuscarawas County Senior Center in Dover.

All nine head football coaches from Tuscarawas County will speak and will provide the community with a preview of the upcoming season, impact players on the roster, the schedule and other matters. Former Times-Reporter Managing Editor Hank Keathley will moderate. Doors will open at 4:45 p.m. with the meal at 5:15 p.m. and program at 6:30 p.m.

Dinner theater to benefit Roxy Theatre

MINERVA − The Minerva Area Chamber of Commerce and the Roxy Theatre Players present “Murder Gallops Along,” a murder mystery dinner theater benefiting the Roxy Theatre, on Saturday. The event will be held at Cherrywood Ridge Barn and Event Center, 525 W. Lincoln Way.

Admission includes a four-course meal. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m. A cash bar will be available. Tickets are $50, and reservations are due by Wednesday. Tickets can be purchased at 330-868-7979, minervachamber@gmail.com or at https://murdergallops.eventbrite.com.

Reading event for children, seniors

SUGARCREEK − Members of the Garaway Senior Center and school-age children will meet for a library read-in day. The children can read their favorite stories to the seniors, and then the seniors will read a story in return.

This Senior Storytelling event will be at the Tuscarawas County Public Library System’s Sugarcreek Branch, 120 South Broadway at 10 a.m. July 17.
