Genealogical society to celebrate 55th anniversary

DENNISON − The Tuscarawas County Genealogical Society will celebrate its 55th anniversary from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at its library, 307 Center St. There will be tours of the library and archives building, book sales, refreshments and library volunteers to answer questions. The library will open at 11 a.m. for normal Saturday hours but will close for research at 2 p.m. for the anniversary open house.

Farmers market appreciation day

DOVER − The Tuscarawas Valley Farmers Market will hold its annual Customer Appreciation Day from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Tuscarawas County Fairgrounds. Shoppers can stop by the Information Booth to sign up for a chance to win one of five gift baskets filled with products from market vendors as well as choose one item of TVFM. At 5 p.m., marketgoers can attend a demonstration inside the Clover Café on how to make apple cider, applesauce, and pies. From 5 to 7 p.m., Howie Campbell will provide live music. The final market will be held Oct. 11, but the annual Holiday Market will be 3 to 7 p.m. Nov. 21 at New Towne Mall.

Tuscarawas Philharmonic to present musical world tour

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Performing Arts Center at Kent State Tuscarawas, 330 University Drive NE, will present the Tuscarawas Philharmonic performing music from different countries and continents at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Tuscarawas County Public Library System will host “Stephen King and The Shawshank Redemption” at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Main Library, 121 Fair Ave. NW.

Author and Largely Literary co-founder Mark Dawidziak will present a program based on his book "The Shawshank Redemption Revealed." Dawidziak will share details about the 70+ interviews he conducted for the book.

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Tuscarawas County Public Library System has partnered with Kim Jurkovic, curator of the Tuscarawas County Historical Society, for a cemetery walk.

Take a walk through the Shanesville First Reformed Cemetery to visit the final resting places and learn stories about some interesting people from our county’s past at 11 a.m. Saturday. Attendees can meet at the cemetery at Hillcrest Drive NW in Shanesville.

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Boris Slogar has retired as chief engineer, after 16 years of service with Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District.

Slogar served more than 30 years as an Ohio public servant with Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Ohio Department of Taxation. He has developed a program to work with the US Army Corps of Engineers to ensure the 14 dams and reservoirs within the MWCD are safe and meet the MWCD’s mission of providing flood mitigation for the region. Slogar has also been instrumental in overseeing a master plan renovation and construction of parks, marinas, and facilities.

Dave Lautenschleger will be the interim chief engineer while a search is conducted to fill the role as Chief of Engineering. Lautenschleger is the deputy chief of surveying and GIS for MWCD.

Presentation on history of Ohio barns is Saturday

ZOAR – The 2023 Zoar Free Speaker Series continues with an informational discussion of the history of Ohio barn construction and their crucial role in agriculture. Ohio barns expert Tom O'Grady will give this free presentation at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Zoar School House.

O’Grady, a board member of both Friends of Ohio Barns and Ohio's Hill Country Heritage Area, has researched Ohio’s natural and cultural geography and settlement for 25 years, with a focus on barns, mound builders and Ohio canals.

62 attend reunion

UHRICHSVILLE − The Uhrichsville West Side’s ninth reunion was held Aug. 5 at Tuscora Park in New Philadelphia. There were 62 in attendees, with one coming from as far away as New Mexico.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Dover Public Library, Tuscarawas County YMCA and Fourth & Faith will host a series of events called Mucho Gusto, which means nice to meet you. These events include various speakers, an author, bilingual story times and story walk at the park.

At the end of the monthlong celebration, a Latino-themed raffle basket will be awarded. To qualify for the basket, participants must pick up a “passport” at the library, YMCA or Fourth & Faith. Every time they go to an event or visit a store, their passport will be stamped. After participants accumulate eight stamps, they can turn in their passport at one of the three sponsors. The drawing for the raffle basket will be Oct. 20.

Carroll County history exhibit at McCook House Museum

CARROLLTON – “Shakers and Movers,” a Carroll County history exhibit is at the McCook House Museum, 15 S. Lisbon St., through Oct. 14. One of the featured individuals is Lois Hemming, who taught school at Carrollton for 32 years and kept a scrapbook of class pictures and newspaper clippings of the students throughout her lifetime. She passed away recently at age 103. The scrapbook is available for perusal. The museum’s hours are Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The museum is seeking groups and/or clubs to decorate trees for the Christmas season, using a theme of their own choosing. If interested, call 330-437-9715.
