Program on human trafficking is Tuesday

DOVER – The College Club of Tuscarawas County and the Dover Public Library will present a program at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday titled "Look Beneath the Surface: Human Trafficking for Faith-based and Community Organizations."

The program will explain what human trafficking is, what it looks like in the community, and how people end up in trafficking situations. Attendees also will learn what to do if they suspect someone is being trafficked and how to prevent it. The program will be in Community Room at the library, 525 N. Walnut St.

National Tourism Week Open House

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Tuscarawas County Convention and Visitors Bureau will host an open house at its newly renovated offices at 124 E. High Ave. from 4 to 6 p.m. May 12.

Stop in for refreshments, door prizes and the expanded Travel Tusc Ticket distribution. All are welcome, but RSVP for the open house to be eligible for the door prizes; call 330-602-2420 or frontdesk@traveltusc.com.

Travel Tusc Tickets this year will be good from mid-May to Sept. 30 and are also available to surrounding county residents this year. The current list of museums on the free ticket includes Age of Steam Roundhouse, Alpine Hills Museum, Camp Tuscazoar’s Pig Roast, Dennison Depot Railroad Museum, The Ernest Warther Museum and Gardens, Fort Laurens, Historic Zoar Village, Little Theater, Reeves Museum, Schoenbrunn Village, Trumpet in the Land, TuscPark’s Norma Johnson Center and Tuscora Park.

Leadership Tuscarawas accepting applications

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Leadership Tuscarawas is accepting applications for the 2023-24 Signature Program class through July 7.

The program focuses on developing community leaders through interaction with local decision-makers and classmates. Group interaction, teamwork, and collaborative community-based projects are important components of the experience.

The Signature Class begins with a two-day opening retreat at Mohican Lodge and Convention Center on Aug. 17-18. Following the retreat, participants spend a full day per month for the next nine months addressing specific aspects of the community in interactive program days. Sessions are held at various locations around the county. Participants also will cover leadership development training modules.

Get help with digital literacy

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Tuscarawas County Public Library System has a new resource, Northstar Digital Literacy, for anyone looking to improve their skills with computers, software, or technology.

Northstar Digital Literacy is a self-directed assessment and learning tool that comes complete with short lessons and practice exercises to improve skills on a number of common computer topics. The resource is available 24/7 at www.tusclibrary.org, and library staff members are available to help during regular hours.

Customers can practice skills, then take assessments to earn certificates. These certificates provide proof of proficient computer and software skills, an important credential for employment. Several assessments are also available in Spanish.

Claymont Foundation alumni awards ceremony is Saturday

UHRICHSVILLE – The Claymont Foundation will host its alumni awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the Claymont High School Auditeria. The foundation will recognize the Classroom and Building Grant Award winners and the scholarship recipients. Light refreshments will be served prior to the awards ceremony. No reservations are necessary for the awards presentation.

The Alumni Award winners and Teacher of the Year are:

  • Distinguished Alumnus Award: Dr. Steven Willard, Class of 2001, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology. He is a partner and co-owner of Generations Women’s Health in Canton.

  • Alumnus Achievement Award: Jason Jackson, Class of 1994, magistrate for the Tuscarawas County Court.

  • Citizen of the Year: Kevin Johns, Class of 1979, owner and partner of Material Handling Specialists, MHS Hardware, MHS Work Safe and MHS Real Estate.

  • Alumnus of the Year: Becky Hillyer, Class of 1981, recently retired as an asset protection manager with Walgreens and previously worked for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives as a senior operations officer.

  • Teacher of the Year: Kristen Metzger, first grade teacher at Claymont Elementary School.

Maifest is Saturday in Zoar

ZOAR – Historic Zoar Village, 198 Main St., will celebrate spring with a traditional German Maifest from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The festival includes German food and drink, German music, German car show, plein air painting, guest speakers, games and make-and-take art projects for kids, free museum tours and a maypole. Maifest admission is $5 and includes all activities.

The German car show will be from 10:30 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. in the lot across from the Zoar Meeting House. Car owners can pre-register by calling 330-874-3011 or emailing zoarinfo@historiczoarvillage.com or register onsite starting at 10 a.m. May 13.

Warther Arboretum tour, flower sale Saturday

DOVER – The Ernest Warther Museum & Gardens, 331 Karl Ave., will host its 87th anniversary celebration and annual free arboretum tour and flower sale Saturday.

Rick Basnett, former naturalist for Ohio and current employee of the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy, will lead a tour of the Dave Warther Arboretum at 11 a.m., featuring discussions on plants, trees and perennials found on the property, as well as the history of the property itself. Tour participants must be able to stand for at least 45 minutes and be able to use stairs.

The museum will host its sixth annual Frieda Warther flower sale starting at 9 a.m. Items for sale will include seeds, perennials, annuals, vegetable plants and hanging baskets.
