Zimmerman Foundation taking grant applications

The deadline for applications to the Zimmerman Foundation for grants to be awarded in July is June 1. The late Blair E. and Anna L. Zimmerman established the foundation to assist qualified tax-exempt organizations in Tuscarawas County that have charitable purposes. Grants are awarded primarily for capital improvements or other capital expenditures.

Program about professional hosts Tuesday

DOVER – Rose Tipka, New Philadelphia resident and founder of Your Family’s Place, a vacation rental company in Ohio’s Amish country, will be at the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St., at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

She will present true-life stories written by professional hosts from around the world. The program will be in the Community Room. To register, call the library at 330-343-6123 or visit www.doverlibrary.org/events.

Meanwhile, visitors can view the work of photographer and watercolor artist Steve Shonk in the Community Room Gallery at the library throughout May. Shonk was a longtime committee member of the Landmark Days Art Show in Navarre and painted the mural at the Towpath YMCA in Navarre.

New Philadelphia High School graduation Saturday

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The 159th New Philadelphia High School graduation will be at Woody Hayes Quaker Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The stadium will open at 5 p.m. for early seating. In case of inclement weather, graduation will be held in the high school gymnasium.

Summer Youth Employment Program taking applications

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Tuscarawas County and Ohio Means Jobs are partnering to provide the Summer Youth Employment Program for ages 14 to 18 with paid summer work experience. Applicants must apply at the Ohio Means Jobs Center, 1260 Monroe St. SW, Suite 35, or call 330-364-9777 for more information.

Young adults must be TANF-eligible. Income eligibility will be assessed at application. The program runs through Sept. 30. Youths earn income and gain work experience without affecting the family’s income eligibility for assistance programs.

The state has made $5 million available. Wages will not exceed $13 per hour. All youth applying for the Summer Youth Employment Program must register on the Ohio Means Jobs website (https://ohiomeansjobs.ohio.gov/home), and a parent or legal guardian must provide consent for the youth to participate.

Open house Wednesday at walk-in clinic

NEWCOMERSTOWN – An open house and ribbon-cutting will be at noon Wednesday to celebrate the opening of the Coshocton Regional Medical Center's Newcomerstown Walk-In Clinic, 6307 E. State Road. All are invited.

Norma Johnson Center seeks to fill board vacancies

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Norma Johnson Center is seeking volunteers to serve on its foundation board. The Center encompasses 303 acres with several hiking trails, ponds and bird viewing area on Old Route 39 between Dover and Sugarcreek.

The Norma Johnson Center is part of TuscParks and is open free to the public seven days a week.

This position involves working alongside TuscParks to create and implement projects to enhance the Norma Johnson Center, assisting with acquiring potential funding sources and helping at Norma Johnson Center events. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

Board member terms run for three years. The board meets at 5 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of the month at the Norma Johnson Center, 125 E. High Ave.

Buckeye Career Center’s SkillsUSA members qualify for nationals

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Three members of Buckeye Career Center’s SkillsUSA chapter have earned bids to the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference June 19-23 in Atlanta.

The students competed at the Ohio SkillsUSA State Championships April 25-26 in Columbus. Ryan Smith (law enforcement/Hiland) took gold/first in Criminal Justice, while the duo of Aaron Lane (PLTW/Indian Valley) and Jonathon McConnell (precision machining and PLTW/Newcomerstown) won gold/first in Urban Search and Rescue.

Other Buckeye Career Center students who earned top placings at state, but did not qualify for nationals, include silver medal winners Connor Marshall (electrical systems/New Philadelphia) in Related Technical Math, Rosy Calel-Velasquez (graphic arts/New Philadelphia) in Graphic Communication, and Hunter Kirtley (construction/Tusky Valley) in Carpentry. Bronze medal winners were Kyler Gump (CAD/Indian Valley) in Architectural Drafting and Sabrinnah Cognion (cosmetology/Claymont) in Esthetics, with model Anna Robinson (cosmetology/Indian Valley).

SkillsUSA is a national career-technical student organization with over 32,000 members in Ohio, working with students, educators, and business partners.
