Writer to talk about Mike Hargrove, Cleveland Indians

DOVER − Sports columnist and author Jim Ingraham will be at the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St., at 6:30 p.m. Thursday to talk about his book "Mike Hargrove and the Cleveland Indians: A Baseball Life."

Scholarships available

DOVER − The Zachary Davis Memorial Foundation is accepting applications for five $1,000 scholarships to seniors in Tuscarawas County who are looking to further themselves in an addiction recovery-related field. The application deadline is April 15. Applications are available at www.zachsstory.org.

Applications will be judged on the following: completed application; written statement of career goals (at least 250 words); school transcript; and letter of recommendation.

The scholarship will be paid directly to the school of the chosen recipient. Applications should be mailed to Zachary Davis Memorial Foundation, c/o Anita Davis, 1711 Dummermuth Road NW, Dover, OH 44622.

Pancake breakfast April 8

FREEPORT − The Antrim Community Volunteer Fire Department pancake breakfast will be from 7 to 11 a.m. April 8 at 20217 Cadiz Road.

Sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs and drinks also will be available. Proceeds will be used to cover the cost of CPR classes for residents. Classes will be announced at a later date.

Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital Run for Home 

NEW PHILADELPHIA − Country Club Rehabilitation Family Day at the Run for Home Community Fitness Festival will be Saturday.

Doors open at the Tuscora Park dining hall building at 8 a.m. There will be face painting, a free “egg run” for the kids at 9:15, and an appearance by the Easter Bunny. Kids participating in the egg run will collect easter eggs during the short run and receive a ribbon at the finish line.

The Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital Run for Home one-mile fun run/walk steps off at 9:30 am. Registration includes large discounts for families and groups. Register at https://tinyurl.com/yhn34rmn.

The one-mile run will be followed by 5K and 10K races. Run for Home activities continue at 7:30 a.m. Sunday with the half-marathon and team-relay. The weekend schedule and registration information are at www.runforhome.org.

‘70s-themed Retro Run is April 15

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Tuscarawas County Public Library System will host its annual 5K on April 15. Registration opens at 9 a.m., and the race begins at 10 a.m.

The ‘70s-themed Retro Run will have participants start at the Main Library, 121 Fair Ave. NW, run through Tuscora Park, and back to the library.

Runners interested in participating can stop into one of the library’s five locations (Main Library, Bolivar, Strasburg, Sugarcreek, or Tuscarawas) to complete and turn in a registration form. The form is also available to download from the library’s website at www.tusclibrary.org.

Runners are encouraged to dress to fit the ‘70s theme. Registration fees are $30 for adults and $20 for kids (grades K-age 17). Awards will be given to the top three men, women and youths who participate. Runners will also receive goodie bags the day of the race.

Bridal showcase is Saturday

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The First Presbyterian Church, 217 E. High Ave., will host a Spring Bridal Showcase featuring local wedding vendors from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free, with goodwill donations accepted. 

$1,000 for tradesman award available

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Heritage Home Association of Tuscarawas County Inc. is accepting applications through April 12 for the Jeff Miller Memorial Tradesman Award, which will be awarded in May.

Graduating seniors attending Buckeye Career Center who have a demonstrated appreciation for and an understanding of the importance of historic preservation and have successfully completed certain programs are eligible to receive the $1,000 stipend. Further qualifying criteria are set forth in the application, which is available in the Buckeye Career Center guidance office.

Presentation about Scio Pottery is Monday

SCIO − The Scio Historical Museum and Scio branch library will present the program "Scio, Ohio" at the Barr Memorial Center at 1:30 p.m. Monday. Museum curator Dee Ann Horstman will give the history of the Scio Pottery Co.

The 30-minute film "Scio, Ohio," made in Hollywood, will be shown. The film tells the story of how Lew Reese turned an abandoned factory building into the successful Scio Pottery, which was later destroyed by fire. The fire made national news when people of the community worked together to rebuild the pottery into a thriving business.

Scio Pottery items will be available for sale. All proceeds will benefit the Scio Historical Museum.

Trap shoot with prizes Saturday

STONECREEK − The Baltic Conservation Club Spring Shoot will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the club, 5650 Troendly Road SW, rain or shine. There will be a trap shoot with meat prizes being handed out. A food stand will be provided.

Blood drive Friday

TUSCARAWAS − A Vitalant blood drive will be from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Community Center, 212 Cherry St.

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments will be taken first. Donors may schedule an appointment and earn reward points by visiting www.vitalant.org/ohiodonorportal, Group Code 4931. Anyone who donates blood at this drive will receive an email to redeem a $10 Amazon gift card.

Historic Zoar Village opens Saturday

ZOAR – Historic Zoar Village opens for the 2023 season on Saturday. All museum buildings will be open, with costumed living history interpreters providing demonstrations about life in the 1850s. Displays, artifacts and guides also share the story of how Zoar evolved.

Zoar’s “History in Pieces” quilt exhibit begins Saturday in the Bimeler Museum. The traveling exhibit of 13 quilts is curated by the National Quilting Museum in Paducah, Kentucky. It also includes several quilts made in Zoar in the 1800s. The exhibit runs through Oct. 29.

Zoar’s 2023 Free Speaker Series begins Saturday. Paul Barte from the Ohio University School of Music will present “The Humor of Music” in the Meeting House, now the Zoar United Church of Christ, at 11 a.m. The program is free and open to the public. Participants do not need to purchase tour tickets to attend the presentation and performance. No reservations are required. Free parking is available near the Meeting House.
