'Godspell' on Deersville Theatre Stage this week

DEERSVILLE – The Deersville Players will present the musical “Godspell” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. June 18. Notary training at library

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Tuscarawas County Public Library System's Main Library, 121 Fair Ave. NW, will host the Ohio Society of Notaries for a comprehensive Ohio-specific notary training from noon to 4:30 p.m. June 23.The three-hour class is for currently commissioned notaries or those interested in becoming a notary. Check-in starts at 11:15 a.m., with the course running from noon to 3:15 p.m. The exam for new notaries will follow the course and generally lasts 30 minutes.The cost of the class is $130 for new notaries and $75 for renewals. Libraries host free summer camps

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Tuscarawas County Public Library System will host free summer camps at its five locations throughout the summer. Children can participate in special programs and explore subjects like art, theatre and cooking. The camps vary in length from one day to a series and are for a variety of ages.

The camps are listed in the library’s programming newsletter which is available at each of the five library locations, and on the library’s website, www.tusclibrary.org.

HARCATUS organizational meeting June 28

NEW PHILADELPHIA – HARCATUS will hold its annual organizational meeting at 1 p.m. June 28 at the First Church of the Nazarene, 233 Fair Ave. NE. The agency’s annual report will be posted to its website, www.harcatus.org, following the meeting.

Free meals for children

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Salvation Army will provide free meals to children Monday through Friday beginning this week through Aug. 11 (closed on June 19 and July 3-4 for federal holidays) at the Salvation Army, 809 Emmet Ave. NW. Breakfast will be from 9 to 9:30 a.m., lunch will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and a snack will be provided from 2:45 to 3 p.m.

Radio host to talk at library

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Dover native Amanda Rabinowitz, host of “All Things Considered” on WKSU’s Ideastream Public Media, will present a program at the Tuscarawas County main library, 121 Fair Ave. NW, at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. She will discuss her coverage of Northeast Ohio sports and her weekly podcasts, as well as her coverage of the local music scene.

Rabinowitz started her radio career at WJER. She is an adjunct faculty at Kent State University’s School of Media and Journalism and the adviser of Kent State’s college radio station.

Tuscarawas County youth leaders meet with senator

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Seven student Youth-to-Youth leaders from Tuscarawas County recently met with Sen. Al Landis to discuss students’ concerns. Tuscarawas Central Catholic students Piper Olsen, Carson Norris, Edith Quiroz, Madysen Sanchez and Alicia Sica-Cale spoke with Landis about concerns regarding their schools and communities and ways to improve.

Students work on display at parks

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) has partnered with five local schools in a promotion that encourages residents to explore the trails at MWCD parks. With materials given by MWCD, students painted canvases that will be on display on MWCD trails throughout the district. Participating schools and the locations of their artwork are:

  • Conotton Valley High School: Atwood Lake Park

  • Lucas High School: Charles Mill Lake Park

  • New Philadelphia High School: Pleasant Hill Lake Park

  • Caldwell High School: Seneca Lake Park

  • Starlight School: Tappan Lake Park

Guests are encouraged to find all five canvases at each of the MWCD parks and can have a maximum of three entries for a chance to win a first prize of $1,000, second prize of a weekend stay at the deluxe log cabin at Pleasant Hill Lake Park, and third prize of a one-day boat rental from a MWCD-operated marina.

The contest will run through Labor Day. To enter, visit one of the MWCD park locations and search for the canvas on the trail. When you find it, take a selfie, or have someone take your photograph. The photo must include yourself, along with the canvas in the background to prove you found the canvas. Artwork exhibited in courtroom

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Local artwork from the Tuscarawas County Center for the Arts is being featured at the courthouse by Judge Michael Ernest of the General Division of the Tuscarawas County Court of Common Pleas.

Jeannine Kennedy, director of the center, said Ernest selected the work from the permanent collection of the Tuscarawas County Center for the Arts, which loaned the work for the yearlong exhibition. The paintings by arts educators Arthur "Skip" Limbach, William Koch, and the late Bryce C. Browning hang in the courtroom. A painting by artist Sarah Dugger and photography by Susan Cramer Stein decorate the judge’s chambers.

VFW post launches Hometown Hero banner program

NEW PHILADELPHIA – New Philadelphia Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1445 is launching a Hometown Hero Banner Program in partnership with the city. The banners will feature area men and women who have served in all branches of the United States Armed Forces over the years, including current military members. The city will mount and display the 18-inch by 36-inch banners on utility poles along North and South Broadway, between Fair Avenue and Front Street.

The banners, the cost of which is being paid for by VFW Post 1445 and Ohio VFW Charities, will be displayed annually from Memorial Day through Veterans Day. The banners will be replaced each year with a new set of banners and service members featured. High-quality photographs may be dropped off and an application completed at the post during normal business hours. The information needed, which will be included on the banner include service member’s name, rank and branch, years served and where served and unit served with. Where served / unit served with could also be a ship name. Submit photos and applications to VFW Post 1445, 441 Park Ave. NW, New Philadelphia.

Hydrant flushing

TUSCARAWAS − The village will be flushing hydrants June 12 through the 16. Temporary low water pressure and discoloration may be experienced.
