Camp Invention coming to Tuscarawas Valley Intermediate

BOLIVAR – Camp Invention, a nationally recognized, nonprofit summer enrichment program, is coming to Tuscarawas Valley Intermediate School the week of June 5.

A program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame in partnership with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Camp Invention challenges children in grades K-6 to tap into their natural curiosity and use their creativity to solve problems. Through hands-on activities, Camp Invention promotes STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) learning.

Each year, the program features a new curriculum. This year’s program encourages children to be confident in their ideas and explore their innovativeness though hands-on activities.

Dennison spring cleanup this week

DENNISON – The village will hold its spring cleanup Tuesday and Wednesday. This is an opportunity for residents to clean up their properties and dispose of items free.

Items include appliances such as stoves, refrigerators and freezers (with the freon removed), washers and dryers, and home furnishings, large outdoor items, mattresses, computers, microwaves, and auto parts. Items will be recycled if possible.

Unacceptable items are tires, fluorescent lights, hazardous materials, liquids, paint, batteries, oil and regular trash. This service is free to all residents who reside within the village. The village reserves the right to limit the number of items picked up at each residence.

For pickup of items or questions, call Tammie Taggart at 740-922-4072, ext. 4, with an address and brief description of the items to be picked up. Items should be placed curbside on the day of pickup. No items will be picked up after Wednesday.

For lawn care items such as grass clippings, small branches and leaves, the village has a yard waste bin at the street department garage, 20 Welch St., available for residents of the Twin City area throughout the year. This is free of charge for residential use only; no commercial mowers or landscapers.

Amateur photographers sought for Railroad Festival photo contest

DENNISON – Amateur photographers are invited to participate in a photo contest sponsored by the Dennison Rotary Club in conjunction with the Dennison Railroad Days Festival, May 31 through June 3.

The contest is open to the public for amateur photographers. The contest is divided into two divisions, adult and youth. The adult division is open to amateur photographers 18 or older. The youth division is open to youths up to age 18. Entry fee is $5 per photo for adult entries and $3 per photo for youth entries. There is no limit on the number of photos each photographer may enter.

The photo categories are animals, flowers, people, scenery and open (any subject).

Entries will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 27 at the Dennison Public Library, 15 N. Fourth St. The photos will be exhibited at the Dennison Library during the Railroad Days Festival from May 30 through June 5. Prizes will be ribbons, as well as cash awards and merchandise for each category. Proceeds will be used for community projects in the Dennison/Uhrichsville area.

Library hosts program on Lynn Drive-In Theatre

DOVER – Darla and Rich Reding, current owners of the Lynn Drive-In Theatre, will be in the Community Room of the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St., at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to share images and their favorite memories of the oldest operating drive-in theater in Ohio and second-oldest continuously operating one in the world.

National Day of Prayer observance at New Towne Mall

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The local National Day of Prayer observance will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at New Towne Mall in the former Elder-Beerman home store. The scripture for this year is from James 5:16, "The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results."

Synergy Worship will oversee worship, and people will be praying throughout the evening for different areas and different things. There will be tables set up for different ministries in the area. The public is invited to attend.

Art on the Alley is May 7 and Oct. 15

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Tuscarawas Arts Partnership has announced this year’s Art on the Alley in downtown New Philadelphia will take place both Sunday, May 7, as well as Sunday, Oct. 15, with both events from 11 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Attendees can expect a wide variety of local arts and creative vendors set up to demonstrate, sell and exhibit their work. Several downtown businesses will be open during the festivities. Food trucks and restaurants will be open.

West Lafayette/Ridgewood Alumni banquet is June 3

WEST LAFAYETTE – The West Lafayette/Ridgewood Alumni Association (WLRAA) will hold its annual banquet June 3 at Ridgewood Middle School for all graduates of West Lafayette and Ridgewood High Schools. The doors will open at 4:30 p.m. for registration, followed at 5:30 p.m. with dinner.

Registration deadline is May 15. The cost is $20 and must be included with registration. An additional $2 annual dues is requested to help defray the cost of mailings and other expenses involved with the banquet.
