Health check event is Saturday

BOLIVAR – The Towpath Rotary Health Check event returns to the Bolivar Army Navy, 165 Canal St., from 6 to 10 a.m. Saturday.

Aultman Hospital will have professional phlebotomists on site to administer the blood draws. Testing is done for cholesterol, anemia, diabetes, kidney and thyroid function, and an optional PSA (prostate cancer) test is available for men. The Aultman WOW Van will be on site, providing free blood pressure checks and health education information.

Cost is $50 (optional PSA for men add $5). Payment is by cash or check only on the day of the event. Please fast for 12 hours before your test, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Pre-registration is not required, but you can sign up in advance at http://www.rotaryhealthcheck.com.

The Bolivar Army Navy will be offering breakfast for purchase. The event is open to everyone from the surrounding area.

Wildlife Management Program on Monday

DOVER – Outdoorsman Randy Schworm will talk at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St., about how trapping is a useful tool for managing wildlife situations.

He will speak of situations in which he has used his trapping skills. The program will be held in the Community Room. Register at www.doverlibrary.org or call the library at 330-343-6123.

Jekyll and Hyde portrayal at Dover Library

DOVER – Chris Hart will bring to life the well-known horror story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, penned by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson in 1886 at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Dover Public Library Community Room, 525 N. Walnut St.

Quilt show this week

DOVER – The Valley Quilt Guild of Tuscarawas County will hold its quilt show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, 1725 N. Wooster Ave.

The show will feature a large display of quilts, vendors, bed turning, raffle baskets, demonstrations, challenge blocks, a boutique, and a Quilters’ Cafe.

Also featured will be a queen-size quilt to be raffled; it will be on display at the show. Tickets will be available for $1 each or 6 for $5. The drawing will be Saturday at the end of the show. The winner need not be present.

Tuscarawas County YMCA names Meagan Shaheen as new CEO

DOVER – The Tuscarawas County YMCA has named Meagan Shaheen as its new chief executive officer, effective Oct. 31.

Selected following a six-month nationwide search, Shaheen will succeed Tiffany Foxx, who stepped down earlier this year. Shaheen will be responsible for continued membership recovery from COVID, strategic planning, staff development, and capital improvements.

Shaheen comes to the Tuscarawas County Y from the YMCA of Central Stark County. A native of Minerva, she started as a lifeguard and became the district executive director in Stark County, where she supervises both the Meyers Lake YMCA and the Eric Snow YMCA in downtown Canton.

She has also worked in the Akron YMCA Association as a waterfront director at Camp Y-Noah and as the aquatics director at the Kohl Family YMCA. She has a bachelor’s degree from Kent State University. She is an active Rotarian and a board member of the Aultman College of Nursing.

Gnadenhutten Library Block Party is Thursday

GNADENHUTTEN – The Gnadenhutten Public Library Board will host its annual Book Month Block Party from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

This year’s event is a fundraiser for the renovation of the main floor scheduled to begin in November. The event will feature professional storyteller Jim Kleefeld presenting “Ohio Spirits” at 6 p.m. The hourlong program will feature stories about Ohio ghosts and include artifacts from Ohio hauntings. The program is suitable for all ages and will include audience participation.

The outdoor event is free and includes hotdogs roasted over an open fire, s’mores, beverages, snacks and door prizes. Those attending are asked to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. The event will move indoors if the weather is poor.

The main floor renovation is scheduled to begin in November and will include new carpet, a new circulation desk, new shelving in the oldest section and a redesigned floor plan.

Donations toward the project can be made at the Block Party in person or by visiting the library at 160 N. Walnut St. in Gnadenhutten. Donations can also be mailed to Gnadenhutten Public Library, PO Box 216, Gnadenhutten, Ohio, 44683. All donors will be recognized on a plaque near the new circulation desks.

Magnolia to flush hydrants

MAGNOLIA − The Magnolia Water Department will be flushing fire hydrants this week between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Water may appear discolored after the hydrants are flushed.

Richard Marx concert Oct. 23

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Richard Marx will perform from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Performing Arts Center at Kent State Tuscarawas, 330 University Drive NE.

Marx, a Grammy-winning artist, has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide while making history as the only male artist whose first seven singles reached the Top 5 on the Billboard charts. Overall, he has scored 14 No. 1 singles, both as a performer and as a songwriter/producer.
