Blood drive Friday

BOLIVAR − The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Faith Baptist Church, 9481 Route 212. The event will honor the lives lost and those injured in November's bus crash, as well as thank first responders and hospital personnel for their work to care for the community that day, according to a news release.

Patrol Trooper and Dispatcher of the Year named

NEW PHILADELPHIA − Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Alex Carroll and dispatcher William Courtright have been selected as the 2023 Trooper of the Year and Dispatcher of the Year at the New Philadelphia Post.

Carroll, a 2012 graduate of New Philadelphia High School, joined the Ohio State Highway Patrol in 2017 and has served at the Lisbon and New Philadelphia posts.

Courtright, originally from West Lafayette, joined the Ohio State Highway Patrol in 2012.

Carroll is now in contention for the District and State Trooper of the Year Award. Courtright is now in contention for the District and State Dispatcher of the Year Award. Both awards will be announced at a later date.

Meeting rescheduled; councilperson needed

BOLIVAR − The Village of Bolivar Planning Commission meeting normally scheduled for the first Monday of the month has been rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. Jan. 2 in the Council Chambers at 117 Canal St NE because of the holiday.

The village is looking for a councilperson to fill a vacancy. Anyone interested should submit a letter of intent to Village Administrator Levi Kaser at villageadministrator@villageofbolivar.com or drop off a copy in the outside dropbox located at the village offices at 109 Canal St. NE. Applications will be accepted until Friday. Interviews will be scheduled for Jan. 2 and 3.

Claymont Foundation accepting scholarship applications

DENNISON − The Claymont Foundation 2024-25 scholarship applications are available for current Claymont High School seniors, current college students who graduated from Claymont, and sophomores who will attend Buckeye Career Center. The deadline to apply is 3 p.m. Feb. 14 for the Current High School Senior Scholarships and the Current College Student Scholarships. The 2024-25 Buckeye Career Center Scholarships are awarded to first-year students who will attend Buckeye Career Center enrolled in Construction Technology, Electrical Systems Technology, Welding, Energy Operations, HVAC, Masonry and Precision Machining programs. The $500 scholarships will cover tuition, lab fees, materials and supplies, such as uniforms, boots or tools.

The 2024-25 Current High School Senior Scholarships are awarded to Claymont Seniors who are planning to attend trade school, community college, or universities. These scholarships cover tuition, computers, supplies, books and university/college/school owned housing. Scholarship awards will be based on essays, grade-point averages and activities, honors and awards.

Two types of scholarships − academic-merit based and financial-need based − are available for Current High School Seniors and Current College Student. Fairfield Township trustees to meet

DOVER − The Fairfield Township Board of Trustees will have its year-end meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at 4738 Johnstown Road to reorganize for 2024. There will be no meeting Jan. 3.

Reeves Foundation grants being accepted

DOVER − The next meeting of the Reeves Foundation Board of Trustees is in February. Grant applications should be submitted by Jan. 24.

Local nonprofits that address the needs of the community are encouraged to contact the Foundation at its Dover office for grant application information by email at office@reevesfound.org or by calling 330-364-4660.

Requests of all sizes are considered but organizations must be 501(c)(3) certified. Emphasis is placed on capital-type expenditures rather than on operating funds.

Conservation board sets meetings

DOVER − The Tuscarawas Soil and Water Conservation District Board will meet at 8 a.m. at 85 E. Iron Ave. on Jan. 9, Feb. 13, March 12, April 9, May 14, June 11, July 9, Aug. 13, Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10.

MINERAL CITY − Because of the New Year holiday, the Mineral-Sandy Ambulance District’s regularly scheduled meeting for January will be postponed one week to 7 p.m. Jan 8 at the Mineral City Volunteer Fire Station.

Sen. Landis appointed chairman of committee

Senate President Matt Huffman (R-Lima) has appointed state Sen. Al Landis (R-Dover) as chairman of the Senate's Community Revitalization Committee.
