Author to speak, Maker Lounge opens at library

DOVER – Bestselling author Gregg Olsen will talk about his latest book, “The Amish Wife: Unraveling the Lies, Secrets, and Conspiracy that Let a Killer Go Free,” at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Dover Public Library. The library’s mini makerspace, the Maker Lounge, will open to the public and hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. It features equipment, including a 3D printer, a sublimation printer, a heat press, a Cricut Maker, an XTool engraver, and a CNC router that are free to use. The space also houses recording equipment, VR headsets and robots that can be used in-house to learn about science, technology, engineering, art and math.

Pancakes with Parents at career center

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Buckeye Career Center will host Pancakes with Parents from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. Thursday for the parents and guardians of current BCC students.

The event allows family members to have breakfast with their student on a school day and visit their lab. Breakfast includes pancakes, sausage patties, and a drink.

To accommodate the crowd, parents are asked to fill the BCC parking lots or park across the street at the Kent State University Performing Arts Center. BCC will provide shuttle buses.

Comedy show Jan. 21 at the PAC

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Performing Arts Center at Kent State Tuscarawas will present the Buckets N Boards Comedy Percussion Show at 3 p.m. Jan. 21. Tickets start at $25 and are on sale at the Performing Arts Center box office, 330-308-6400 or at www.kent.edu/tuscpac. The box office is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Tunes and Tales program at the library

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Tuscarawas County Public Library System is partnering with the Tuscarawas Philharmonic for a new Tunes and Tales program starting at 10 a.m. Thursday, to introduce classical orchestra culture to area children. The 10-week program will be in conjunction with the library’s storytime cycle.

The Philharmonic will provide musicians every other week who will share a book featuring their instrument as they play periodically during the reading. Following the storytime, the musician will play a chosen piece of music and children can craft their own instrument to play. The focus each week will be on musical styles and how each tells a story to create emotions, such as the emotions brought on by listening to opera music or watching a ballet performance, according to a news release.

Storytime will begin again this week and run through the week of March 18.

SUGARCREEK – Comedian Yakov Smirnoff will perform at The Ohio Star Theater at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Friday. Singer-songwriter-musician and Gospel Music Association Dove Award winner Gordon Mote will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday. MWCD Board receives philanthropy award

The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District Board of Directors has received The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio’s 2023 Chaddock Philanthropist of the Year Award, recognizing those who have made a difference in Appalachia through philanthropy.

Earlier in 2023, the district’s board invested $5 million to create the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District Fund for Environmental Stewardship, which is managed by The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio. The new fund will advance the district’s and FAO’s commitment to enhancing conservation efforts throughout the 32-county region.
