Weekend food program gets $2,500 donation

CADIZ − The Blessings in a Backpack program received a $2,500 donation from J-W Power for the weekend food program in the Harrison Hills School District. The program was nominated by Mick McCue, inventory coordinator for J-W Power.

About 225 students receive weekend food bags when there is a chance of food insecurity in the home. The program has been in existence for about nine years.

Trivia Nights, poetry group at library

DOVER − The Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St., will hold Trivia Night at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Community Room.

These friendly competitions are held on the second Wednesday of every month. Teams of two to six players are invited to compete at trivia. Everyone is welcome, even if you don’t belong to a team. Prizes will be provided for members of the winning team. For more information, call the library at 330-343-6123.

People interested in writing poetry are invited to join a group of fellow poets that meets on the second Wednesday of each month. This month’s meeting is from 2 to 4 p.m. in the community room of the library. The goal of the group is to support and encourage fellow poets in their creative pursuits. Participants will have a chance to share their work and receive critique from fellow poets. No registration is necessary. Help available for heating bills

DOVER − The Ohio Department of Development and HARCATUS Tri-County Community Action Organization Inc. will help income-eligible Ohioans stay warm during the cold winter months. The Home Energy Assistance Winter Crisis Program provides eligible Ohioans assistance paying a utility or bulk fuel bill or assistance paying for heating system repairs. The program runs until March 30.

To apply, clients are required to schedule an appointment with HARCATUS. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 855-806-9650.

Eligible households can receive up to $175 if they are a client of a regulated utility, or $750 if they are a client of unregulated utilities such as electric cooperatives and municipal utilities. The assistance is applied to their utility bill and/or applied to heating system repair costs. Ohioans must have a gross income at or below 175% of the federal poverty guidelines to qualify for assistance. An appointment no-show may result in utilities being shut off.

Library selling 'Views from the Hot Seat’

DOVER − The Dover Public Library is selling copies of local author Mike Gunther's book, “Views from the Hot Seat,” for $15. Cash or checks will be accepted. All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Homeless of Tuscarawas County.

Views from the Hot Seat is a collection of writings about small town America published from 2013 to 2022. It is full of shared thoughts, opinions, and recollections focusing on a variety of topics ranging from high school sports to personal revelations. Gunther, a retired high school educator, is a lifelong resident of the Tuscarawas Valley. For more information, contact the Dover Public Library at 330-343-6123.

Applications sought for New Philadelphia Council seat

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Tuscarawas County Republican Party Central Committee is accepting applications for candidates to fill the vacant Ward 4 Council seat in the city. Applicants must live within the Ward 4 limits and have voter registration with the Republican Party. This vacancy was created by the resignation of Jim Seldenright Jr., effective Jan. 1.

Eva Women’s Clinic opens new location Monday

NEW PHILADELPHIA − Eva Women’s Clinic will open a third location Monday at 152 N. Broadway St. The other locations are in Canton and Akron.

'Tuesdays with Morrie’ at The Little Theatre of Tuscarawas County

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Little Theatre of Tuscarawas County, 466 Carrie Ave. NW, will present “Tuesdays with Morrie” through Jan. 15.

Directed by Roxie Long, and sponsored by Jed, Machelle and Meghan Miller, the show is produced through special arrangement with Broadway Licensing. The play chronicles the lives of journalist Mitch Albom and Morrie Schwartz, his former college professor.

Chester Boffo and Jack Thomas head up the cast, with Malarie Chineal as the off-stage voice of Janine.
