School district, athletics director receive award

BOWERSTON − The Conotton Valley Union Local School District along with Athletic Director Jonathon Stuck have received the Ohio Interscholastic Association of Athletic Administrators and Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Bruce Brown Award of Excellence. This award recognizes Ohio interscholastic athletic departments that demonstrate best practice in the endorsement and promotion of education-based athletic programming, according to a news release.

Stuck is honored for his efforts on behalf of the district to meet established criteria that best serve the academic, physical, social, and emotional needs of student-athletes. Only 27 high schools in the state have achieved this award. Stuck and two guests will be honored at the OIAAA Conference in Columbus on Nov. 13 at the awards luncheon.

Fish fry, meat shoot at gun club

DOVER − Zoar Road Gun Club will have a fish fry Saturday. Doors open at 6 p.m. with all-you-can-eat fish, fries, hushpuppies, onion rings, and coleslaw. Soda and water provided. There will be gun drawings and raffle prizes.

A Lucky X Meat Shoot will be next Sunday. Sign up at 9 a.m. Lunch will be available.

Round Table to host program on Harriet Beecher Stowe

DOVER − The Tuscarawas Valley Civil War Round Table will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Community Room at the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St.

Historian Ruth Pengrace will present An Evening with Harriet Beecher Stowe. Stowe's book, "Uncle Tom's Cabin," fueled the abolitionist movement and not only helped Lincoln get elected, but ultimately played a role in starting the Civil War.

The mission of the Tuscarawas Valley Civil War Round Table is to educate the community about the American Civil War, to preserve Civil War heritage and to remember those who struggled for their cause. For more information, call 330-343-6123.

Living Library in Dover on Saturday

DOVER − The fourth annual Living Library will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St. Ten people from the community from all walks of life will share one-on-one with attendees.

Those who will talk about their experiences are Bryce Beckley, Larry “Ike” Compton, Paula Fawcett, Jeannine Kennedy, Beth Lewis, Mark McKenzie, Pat Potter, Rex Ray, Bob Von Kaenel and Joan Wenzel.

Spaghetti dinner at church Saturday

DUNDEE – Dundee United Methodist Church on Ohio 93 will hold its annual spaghetti dinner from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Meals are dine-in or carryout by donation. Proceeds will be used for local missions and Samaritan's Purse shoebox ministries. The menu includes spaghetti, applesauce, cupcakes, bread and drink.

Four students receive scholarships

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO) has awarded more than $593,000 in donor-established postsecondary scholarships to students across Appalachian Ohio, including four students from Tuscarawas County.

Brittyn Miller, a graduate of Buckeye Trail High School, received the Madison High School Alumni Scholarship, supporting Madison High School graduates or descendants of former Madison High School students.

Three Tuscarawas County students received the Bob Evans and Wayne F. White Legacy Scholarship, honoring the legacy and commitment these two friends had to the Appalachian Ohio region. They are:

  • Katlyn Hines, a graduate of Dover High School

  • Margaret Johnson, a graduate of Indian Valley High School

  • Thaddeus VanArsdalen, a graduate of New Philadelphia High School

Swiss steak dinner at church Nov. 12

NEW PHILADELPHIA − Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 139 Third St. NE, will hold a Swiss steak dinner from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 12. The cost is $15. Carryout will be available. For more information, call at 330-343-6976.

Turkey dinner set for Friday

SHERRODSVILLE − Sherrodsville Calvary Church, 338 S. Church St., will have a turkey dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday. Dinner will include turkey, dressing, coleslaw, applesauce, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, corn, rolls, pie and cake. No drinks or silverware included. All proceeds to benefit Sherrodsville Calvary Church Local Outreach.

Ragersville Elementary School earns honor

SUGARCREEK − Ragersville Elementary School has been named a 2023 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education as an exemplary high performing school. This award recognizes Ragersville as one of the best schools in the nation.

Ragersville was nominated by the Ohio Department of Education for its academic excellence and for closing achievement gaps among students, according to a news release from Garaway Local Schools.

The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing achievement gaps.

The Blue Ribbon award will be presented to Ragersville Elementary School during a Nov. 17 ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Craft show scheduled for Saturday

TUSCARAWAS − Indian Valley Cross Country will hold its annual craft show at Indian Valley Middle School, 261 School St., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Grayden Sproull receives scholarship

UHRICHSVILLE − Uhrichsville resident Grayden Sproull has received academic scholarships for the 2023-24 academic year from Oklahoma State University Ferguson College of Agriculture. He is majoring in animal science.
