Village of Bolivar changes location of public meetings

BOLIVAR − The Village Council meetings, Zoning Board of Appeals/Planning Commission and all committee meetings now will be held at 109 Canal St. NE in council chambers. This change of location is the result of a formal notice by the Bolivar Fire Department that the village is no longer is permitted to use the Bolivar Fire Department’s meeting hall as a meeting location.

Teen literary magazine seeks submissions

DOVER − Local teens in grades six through 12 are invited to submit their original writing and artwork to the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St., for a chance to be published in the library’s Teen Literary Magazine, Tornado Alley.

Submission forms are available at the library, at Dover High School, and online at http://www.doverlibrary.org.

The deadline for submissions is Feb. 28. Teens may apply to be an editor during this time to help the library select works and make other publication decisions. Interested teens can contact the library at 330-343-6123 for more information. Any teen living in Tuscarawas County may submit up to four pieces for consideration. Submission categories are fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and art. Final selections will be made by April 1.

Dover Rotary’s carnation sale is Monday and Tuesday

DOVER − The Rotary Club of Dover will hold its annual Community Carnation Sale from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

Carnation Sale locations are Fundays, 1345 Fourth St. NW, New Philadelphia, and Softies, 717 N. Wooster Ave. Dover High School Interact Club members and Dover Rotarians will be working the event. Carnations prepared by students at the Buckeye Career Center will be sold for $20 per dozen. Proceeds will benefit Dover Rotary charities.

The Rotary Club of Dover meets weekly at the Tuscarawas County Senior Center, 425 Prospect St. For more information, call 330-827-4513.

Nerf Wars at the Y

DOVER – The Tuscarawas County YMCA, 600 Monroe St., will hold family night Nerf Wars on Friday with two one-hour sessions.

Children in kindergarten to second grade will play from 6 to 7 p.m. Children in grades 3 through 6 will play from 7 to 8 p.m. Parents are welcome to register as a player in both age groups (fee required) or be part of the action by helping their child participate at no cost.

Players must bring their own gun and safety goggles. If equipment is needed, contact the Y for available options. The Y will provide all darts, which are standard blue style Nerf. Snacks and prizes are included.

Learn a new way to create art

DOVER − Library assistant Mallory Thompson will present a program at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Dover Public Library titled "The Magic of Midjourney: Using Artificial Intelligence to Transform Words into Pictures." She will teach participants how to make unique art, with no experience necessary.

Participants do not need computer experience or art skills to use Midjourney. In this class for beginners, participants will learn how to use Midjourney and create artwork. This class is for all ages and includes an opportunity to participate in a community art show.

Newcomerstown sixth grader headed to regional spelling bee

NEWCOMERSTOWN − Sixth grader Aleyda Florian, daughter of Luis and Amanda Florian, correctly spelled the word "emigrate" in the ninth round of the annual Rachel B. Stoffer Spelling Bee on Jan. 13 to become this year's champion.

Forty-two Newcomerstown Middle School students in grades 6-8 participated in the annual spelling bee. First runner-up was last year's champion, seventh grade student Lauren Ahle, and second runner-up was eighth grader Breann Kerr. Aleyda will have the opportunity to compete in the 77th Canton Repository Regional Spelling Bee to be held March 4 at Kent State University's Stark campus.

Dinner and a musical, free for senior citizens

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The New Philadelphia City School District will host residents of the New Philadelphia City School District who are 65 or older for dinner and a musical Feb. 23.

The special Senior Citizen Dinner Celebration event featuring the Welty Middle School musical presentation of “The Addams Family” will be in the New Philadelphia High School cafeteria, 343 Ray Ave. NW. Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the show at 7 p.m.

Auditions for ‘Rumors’ are Feb. 19, 20

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Little Theatre of Tuscarawas County, 466 Carrie Ave. NW, will hold auditions for the Neil Simon farce “Rumors” at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 19 and 20. Registration will begin at 6 p.m.

Four major men's and four major women’s parts will be cast. There are two minor parts. Character ages range from late 20s to 50s or 60s, and are flexible. Some roles require physical agility. Auditions will be cold readings from the script. The plot concerns four couples who arrive at an upscale dinner party to discover the host in dire circumstances and his wife and maid missing.

Tuscarawas Valley Film Festival donates to Big Brothers Big Sisters

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Tuscarawas Valley Film Festival ended 2022 with its largest donation ever to Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Central Ohio. The check for $2,000 was presented to Christine Lyon, operations assistant at the local Big Brothers Big Sisters.

The festival showcases locally produced films, documentaries and other productions that do not typically get screened at large theaters. It was developed as a joint idea between Mike Ernest, part owner of the Quaker Cinema, and Ty Simmelink and other participants of Leadership Tuscarawas. The festival showed movies at a nominal cost on four successive Thursday nights last fall at the Quaker Cinema, 158 W. High Ave.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Central Ohio, with an office at 1260 Monroe St. NW, has been active since 1973, serving children in Tuscarawas and Carroll counties with school programs in eight different districts across the counties.
