Dover City Schools accepting open-enrollment applications

DOVER − Dover City Schools will once again offer interdistrict open enrollment with school systems throughout Ohio.

New students who wish to enter Dover City Schools for the 2023-24 school year may complete open enrollment application forms until March 3. Open enrollment applications will be accepted on a first-come, first served basis, and open enrollment slots will be filled upon board-established classroom numbers and student/teacher ratios.

Open enrollment applications must be completed online at www.dovertornadoes.com. Select the Parent Portal link under the Parents tab. For more information, call Helen McKeever at 330-364-7104.

Trivia competition is Wednesday

DOVER − Trivia Night will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the community room at the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St.

New teams are welcome. Even if you don’t belong to a team, you can join an already existing team.

Competitions are held at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month. Teams of two to six players are invited. Prizes will be provided for members of the winning team. For more information, call the library at 330-343-6123.

Civil War Round Table to meet Thursday

DOVER − The Tuscarawas Valley Civil War Round Table will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the community room at the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St.

Living historian Chris Hart will present “Too Young to Die: The Story of the VMI Cadets at Battle of New Market.” For more information, call 330-343-6123.

Social Security program is Monday

DOVER − Social Security Administration public affairs specialist Robert Fenn will present a program at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Dover Library community room, 525 N. Walnut St.

He will discuss the retirement and Medicare programs. He will also cover the filing options when it comes to spousal and disability benefits, key factors to consider when determining the right time to file, how you can work and collect benefits at the same time, and how and when to file an application.

Fenn has been with the Social Security Administration since September 1999, first as a service representative, then as a claims representative. In that position, he specialized in retirement, survivors, disability and Medicare insurance benefits.

Daddy Daughter Dance at the Y

DOVER − The Tuscarawas County YMCA, 600 Monroe St., will hold a Daddy Daughter Dance from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Registration deadline is Wednesday.

Girls ages 3 years to grade 4 may be accompanied by their fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, uncles, big brothers, or any other important male figure in their life. The evening will include music, dancing, refreshments and photo opportunities. Tickets are $10 per couple for Y members, or $15 per couple for community members. This year’s theme is “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.”

Singing Valentines available

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Delphian Chorale will be delivering singing Valentines from 3 to 8 p.m. Feb. 13 and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 14. Delivery includes a male or female barbershop quartet singing “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” a carnation and a floral card.

The cost of singing Valentines is $15 for delivery in New Philadelphia and Dover, and $25 for elsewhere in Tuscarawas County. Orders will be taken via the form on the New Philadelphia High School vocal music website, npvocalmusic.com, or by calling the choir office at 330-364-0682. Online orders may be paid with a credit or debit card; call-in orders must be paid by cash or check.

Nominations being taken for teaching awards

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Quaker Foundation is accepting nominations for the 21st annual Dr. William J. and Mae Hurst Jackson Award for Distinguished Teaching at New Philadelphia City Schools.

Funded by the Jackson family, the award is an annual recognition of and incentive for superior teaching in the district. Two exceptional New Philadelphia teachers will receive an award of $6,000 each.

Eligible teachers must be currently active in the New Philadelphia classroom in grades pre-kindergarten through 12 and must have taught in the New Philadelphia City Schools for five years or more.

Nomination forms are available online at www.npschools.org or at www.quakerfoundation.org. Forms are also available at the Quaker Foundation Office, 124 N. Broadway, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. The nomination deadline is 2 p.m. Feb. 17. Sports writer Terry Pluto to talk Tuesday

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Tuscarawas County Public Library System will host Cleveland Plain Dealer and Cleveland.com sports writer Terry Pluto at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at its Main Library, 121 Fair Ave. NW. Pluto will discuss his latest book, “Vintage Browns.”

Discussion about Strasburg schools Thursday

STRASBURG – The Tiger Way: State of the District Community Conversation will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday in the school cafetoria to discuss the current state of the district and vision for the future.

The band will be sponsoring the event and supplying a spaghetti dinner at 6 p.m. Donations are welcome. The presentation will begin at 6:45 p.m. At 7:15 p.m. there will be a community social with dessert.

Dutchman Hospitality Group names new president

WALNUT CREEK − Dutchman Hospitality Group has appointed Mike Miller as the successor to retiring president Mike Palmer.

Miller came to Dutchman Hospitality Group in 2011 as the general manager of Carlisle Inn Sugarcreek and was an integral part of the launch of Ohio Star Theater.

Miller attended the University of Akron, finalizing his business degree at DeVry University in Columbus. After graduation, he was general manager at Courtyard by Marriott at Easton Town Center in Columbus, receiving the Ohio Hotel & Lodging Association Columbus General Manager of the Year Award in 2010.

Palmer was Dutchman Hospitality Group president for more than 16 years. Miller officially took office as president Jan. 30.
