June 13 meeting

KEY ACTION Hired two certified teachers and accepted resignations from several certified and classified employees.

DISCUSSION: The board issued one-year certified teaching contracts to Ryan Osman, middle school/high school Intervention Specialist, and Logan Ladrach, middle school Intervention Specialist, both effective Aug. 18. The board accepted the resignations of Taylor Boswell, Intervention Specialist; Chris Emley, fourth grade teacher; Kara Ramsey, executive secretary; and Heidi Swinford, OSS/TV high school secretary.

In another matter board member Dick Gooding spoke about meeting with the three guidance counselors Mandy McElwee, high school, Julie Peterson, middle school and Emily Amendola, elementary school. He said they were very personable and enthusiastic about their vocation and love to do the things they do with the students. They also appreciate the support of the administration. Gooding said attended a Board Leadership Institute presented by the Ohio School Board Association.

He said statistics should that the state of students post COVID-19 that 98.7 percent of students were dealing with stress/anxiety; 92.7 percent of students are dealing with depression among other concerning issues. He said not all of the issues students face are COVID related. He said counselors across Ohio are experiencing similar issues with students. He thanked the TV counselors for working with the students and helping them.

OTHER ACTION

• Issued one-year classified contracts to Harley Carlile, high school custodian; Kayla Duby, high school IS Instructional aide; Chad Gintz, middle school custodian; Jennifer Skrajner, high school instructional aide, (Buckeye Career Center).

• Issued a one-year supplemental contract to Darrell Markijohn, head boys golf coach.

• Approved Dylan Pohovey, temporary summer help, $15 per hour up to eight hours per day as needed.

• Approved the rate for a substitute cashier at $10 per hour.

• Gave approval for a shared service agreement with the Stark County Educational Service Center for Stacey Bettis, food service coordinator.

• Approved a shared service agreement with Conotton Valley School District and Strasburg Franklin School District for the transportation of a special need student to each district, at an estimated cost of $16,000 for each student for the 2022-23 school year.

• Set lunch prices as follows; Kindergarten-4th grade, $2.75; grades 5-12, $3; breakfast K-12, $1.50.

• Entered into an agreement with Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital for certified athletic training services, Aug. 1, 2020 through July 31, 2023 at an approximated cost of $25,000.

• Agreed to advertise and receive bids for four school buses through Southwestern Ohio Education Purchasing Council on the board’s behalf. The district is not required to purchase buses.

• Instructional fees are as follows; Kindergarten-grade 4, $55; grades 5-8, $30; If paid by Oct 1, five dollars is taken off the cost. Grades 9-12 fee amounts as listed in the course registration guide and tech $30 grades 5-12 for Chromebook care/maintenance, accidental damage, lost or stolen devices.

UP NEXT meets at 8 a.m. June 30 for a special fiscal year-end meeting in the superintendent’s office. A work session will be held at 8 a.m. July 28 in the superintendent’s office and the next regular board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 8 in the Trojan Center. The July 11 meeting has been canceled.
