KEY ACTION Passed a resolution declaring intent to proceed with election for renewal of an emergency levy.

Discussion: Voters will be asked to approve a 2.6-mill, 10-year levy on the May 3 ballot. If approved the levy will generate $940,000 annually. This will not increase property taxes.

In another matter the board accepted donations or grants for $100,000 each from an anonymous contributor and Eleet Cryogenics for the middle school-high school auditorium; $12,285 Lauren Manufacturing and $2,288 from Allied Machine and Engineering for Project Lead the Way, $200 Tuscarawas valley Ruritans and $150 Bolivar Lion’s Club, Choral Department; $500 St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Affordable Christmas.

OTHER ACTION

• Administered the oath of office to Sally Green and Amy Burrier. Appointed and administered the oath of office to Ben Overton and Kathryn Johnson to serve on the board of education. Overton and Johnson will serve through Dec. 31, 2023.

• Elected Amy Burrier, board president, and Dick Gooding, vice president. Board members will receive $125 per meeting for up to 12 meetings a year.

• Board members will receive $60 per day for training less than three hours per day and $125 a day for training more that for attending the Ohio School Boards Association Conference and other conferences related to board members duties.

• Established a $5,000 service fund for board members for expenses incurred by board members in their official representation in performance of their duties.

• Appointed Dr. Derek Varansky as Superintendent designed responsible for temporarily fulfilling district leadership and operational responsibilities in the absence of the superintendent due to the superintendent being unavailable, incapacitated or other extenuating circumstances. A superintendent’s license will be temporarily fulfilled by the Superintendent of the East Central Ohio Educational Service Center. Superintendent Mark Murphy said this action is a safe guard for the district, if he is not available.

• Heard David Bennett, a resident, discuss legislation and if the district teaches legislation, civics, and history of the constitution. Murphy explained to Bennett what is being taught and thanked him for his concern.

• Held the public hearing on the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school calendar. It will be adopted at the Feb. 14 meeting.

• Accepted the resignation of Zachary Bell, Invention Specialist, effective May 27.

• Granted a one-year contract to Danielle Terry, high school cashier, effective Jan. 3.

• Approved early graduation to Aubrey Lloyd, effective Jan. 14.

• Approved membership in the Ohio School Boards Association at a cost of $4,983 per year.

• Approved Mark Phillips, treasurer, as the board’s authorized designee to attend required public records training on Jan. 26.

• Heard January is school board recognition month. Murphy said the board brings strength to the district and they possess a very caring leadership ability.

• Heard Murphy report on the mid-year review, achievement growth to date and Character Lab, and highlights of the fall 2021 survey.

• Issued one-year supplemental certified coaching contracts to Brian Finney, head boys track; John Fletcher, middle school track; Amanda McElwee, head girls track; and Sue Sciury, middle school track.

• Granted one-year supplemental coaching contracts to contracted employees Anthony Piconke, head softball and Andrew Reichman, assistant softball.

• Recognized the high school students of the month as follows: Dylan Burke, high school; Elizabeth Angione, fine artist; athlete, Ashley Merrick. Middle School – Brock Boyd, fifth-grade; Lydia Miller, sixth-grade; Abigail Gaynor, seventh-grade; Sarah Reynolds, eighth -grade, Cole Kuykendall, fine artist.

• The board meets at 7 p.m. the second Monday of each month in the High School Trojan Center.

UP NEXT meets at 7 p.m. Feb. 14 in the High School Trojan Center.
