Tuscarawas Valley takes another step toward renovating middle school

KEY ACTION: Passed a resolution regarding the design phase for the pre-kindergarten to sixth grade elementary school.

DISCUSSION: The Ohio Schools Facilities Commission has approved the district to participate in the Classroom Facilities Assistance program for renovations and additions to the current middle schoo and allowance to demolish Bolivar Intermediate school, Tuscarawas Valley Primary school and a portion of the current high school. The district is constructing a new high school/middle school with utility tax collected from Rover Pipeline.

In another matter the board recognized Willard Himes as the recipient of the classified staff award from the Northeast Region of the Ohio School Board Association. Board members Ben Overton, Katie Johnson, Dick Gooding and Sally Green received aptitude awards based on a board knowledge test. Board president Amy Burrier received the Ohio School Board Association recognition award for serving as board president the past two-years. Every spring and fall awards are given to area boards of education.

OTHER ACTION:

  • Gave approval to a internet service agreement with the Oho Mid-Eastern Regional Educational Service Agency, (OME-RESA) effective July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2028, to provide district-wide internet access, through Horizon, for $75,000.

  • Granted a one-year supplemental contracted employee contract to Jason Johnson, head wrestling coach.

  • Amended the supplemental contract for Matt Ward, head girls’ basketball coach with a $1,500 supplemental donation to assistant basketball volunteer, Shawn Dillon. A supplemental coaching contract was then approved for Shawn Dillon, with a supplemental donation from Matt Ward of $1,500 and to Danielle Wallick, asst. girls’ basketball coach, $500 which she donated to Dillon. The district only pays for one assistant coach for each sport, so the coaches divide the stipends among volunteers.

  • Rescinded a one-year supplemental contract for Tricia McCray, middle school mentor, approved at the Sept. board meeting.

  • Granted a one-year supplemental contract to Katie Burrier, middle school girls basketball volunteer. She will receive a supplemental donation from Aaron Hawkins for $2,500.

FOR YOUR INFO:

  • Recognized the students of the month, Matthew Koehler, high school; Emily Schuman, fine artist, Cara Stump, athlete. Middle school – Carson McCourty, fifth grade; Reagan Kenosky, sixth grade; Cecelia Helwig, seventh grade; Chloe Stephenson, eight grade; Camden McCoy, fine artist.

  • Veterans Day programs will be held at 9 a.m. Wed. Oct. 9 in the middle school and at 9 a.m. Nov. 11 in the primary school.

  • The fall sports and band bonfire will be 7 p.m. Nov. 21 at the soccer field.

UP NEXT: meets at 7 p.m. Nov. 21 in the high school Trojan Center changed from 7 p.m. Nov. 14.
