THURSDAY-SATURDAY

ARDT spring 2023 concert: The University of Alabama's Alabama Repertory Dance Theatre is presenting five choreographic works, conceived and produced by members of the UA dance faculty or guest choreographers, for the currently running concerts, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, 5:30 p.m. Friday, and 2 p.m. Saturday, in the Dance Theatre at UA (building across from Rowand-Johnson Hall now known as English Building, formerly Morgan Hall). One guest choreographer, Jim Cooney, is a teacher, director, and choreographer from New York, currently associate choreographer of the Broadway national tour of "My Fair Lady." He has supported UA since 2011 by offering scholarships to dancers to attend Broadway Dance Center in NYC. This semester he taught masterclasses and offered mock auditions while setting his work for ARDT. For this concert, Cooney is bringing his jazz piece "T's" to the stage. This three-act burlesque-themed work fuses theater, contemporary, and street jazz styles. Cooney said: “The idea of a dancer being a chameleon is an important one. By showcasing three different styles of movement, students can demonstrate the breadth of their talent and capability of interpreting a story with a character. This can be a great way for the audience to see the full range of their capabilities.” Tickets are $22 general, $20 for seniors and UA faculty and staff, or $15 for students. They can be purchased noon-4 p.m. in Rowand-Johnson Hall, or by phone at 205-348-3400, or online any time at ua.universitytickets.com. For more, see www.theatre.ua.edu.
