TV reporter rushing to ‘breaking news’ scene finds boyfriend on one knee, video shows

An Alabama news reporter rushed to the scene of “breaking news” — and found her boyfriend down on one knee, video shows.

The surprise marriage proposal left TV journalist Valerie Bell in shock.

“Here I was, thinking I was going to breaking news,” Bell, a reporter at WBMA in Birmingham, wrote July 1 on Instagram. “But little did I know, it was all part of a massive collaborative plan to pull off one heck of a surprise.”

A five-minute clip Bell posted to social media starts as a vehicle pulls into a parking lot near police cars and a fire truck. Bell is seen getting out, taking a picture with her phone and talking to a cop about a domestic violence incident near a lake.

But before Bell can take notes, the camera captures someone behind her down on one knee, holding a ring box. The cop asks her to turn around, revealing the big surprise.

“I’m just trying to process what just happened. Oh my god,” she says in the video, before she’s asked about the surprise. “I thought there were kids in the water. That’s so bad.”

The TV reporter’s boyfriend, Blake Bjornson, then asks for her hand in marriage. Bell responds “yes” before the two share a kiss.

Later on social media, Bell thanked first responders, WBMA chief photographer Bill Castle and her now-fiance for helping to create the special memory.

“Can’t wait to spend forever with you,” Bell wrote on Twitter. “I’m the most lucky girl.”

So, how did her fiance make the engagement happen?

“Bjornson, who works as a firefighter, pulled together some of his friends (including) the Pell City Police Department to help pull off the proposal story of a lifetime,” WBMA wrote on Facebook.

Bell didn’t respond to McClatchy News’ requests for comment.
