TV's Best Comedy—Yeah, We Said It—'Abbott Elementary' Is Back

Sharpen your pencils! America's favorite teachers are finally back. After a hit first season, Abbott Elementary is back in September for a highly-anticipated return to the classroom. The TV teachers won viewers' hearts in the rookie campaign of Quinta Brunson's now Emmy-winning series. No doubt we can expect anything different from Season Two.

The mockumentary-style sitcom follows the lives of teachers at Abbott Elementary, a heavily underfunded school in Philadelphia. Under the management of a hilariously incompetent (and fabulous) principal, the teachers do their best to make it work for the kids at their school⁠—all while dealing with their own personal lives.

Brunson made history as the first Black woman to receive three Emmy nominations for a comedy, as well as the youngest Black woman to earn a nomination in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy category. On September 12, she took home the Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy, and her castmate Sheryl Lee Ralph—that's Mrs. Howard to you—won the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy award.

Another win: Season Two of Abbott Elementary will run 22 episodes long–nearly double the amount of last season. Here's everything we know about the new episodes so far.

When Will Abbott Elementary Season Two Premiere?

Season Two will make its debut, fittingly, on September 21—right at the start of the school season. Given Abbott Elementary's high episode count, we'll have the show in our lives at least until the spring, and we couldn't be happier.

How To Watch Abbott Elementary

Abbott Elementary will air weekly on Wednesdays on ABC at 9 p.m. ET. The following day, the latest episode will become available to stream on Hulu. The first season is available to stream in full on both Hulu and HBO Max.

What's in Store For the Abbott Elementary Crew?

In an interview with Elle, Brunson revealed plans for more field trips, "literally and figuratively." Meanwhile, Sheryl Lee Ralph "wants Barbara to start a choir in the vein of Sister Act 2" and Lisa Ann Walter (who plays Melissa) wants the Abbott teachers to travel to a teaching convention, "except they can’t afford an expensive one, so it’s, like, Atlantic City."

We can expect the second season of the show to delve deeper into the personal lives of Abbott Elementary's beloved teachers, too. Since Janine (Brunson) finally broke up with her boyfriend Tariq (Zack Fox), we can anticipate her life to change as she navigates single-dom—while remaining the perky, endearing, and annoying (depends on who you ask!) teacher that she is.

For all of the Janine/Gregory shippers out there, there is hope, though at the moment Gregory is dating Barbara’s daughter Taylor (Iyana Halley). Despite this, Williams hopes for more romance between his and Brunson's characters: “[Gregory’s] got to grow a lot before he’s ready for a relationship, period, let alone with Janine," he said to Elle. "However, we can see, from the outside point of view, how if they do the work, they could really have something special."

We will miss watching Janine and Tariq do their secret handshake, but that's about all he could offer her. Best of luck to Tariq in New York.
