Twice as nice: Couple open second Gigi's Tacos and Margaritas Mexican restaurant

Hector and Gigi Berber are becoming familiar faces in the city, on Wednesday opening the couple's second Tacos & Margaritas restaurant, at 1111 W. Fourth St., during a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Richland Area Chamber-Economic Development officials and community leaders.

Some may know Gigi Berber and her husband, the chef, from across town where they operate Tacos & Margaritas at the corner of Lexington and Cline avenues.

Others may recognize her from La Mexicana Market, which in April 2023 celebrated a grand opening and ribbon cutting at 1329 Lexington Ave. Owners Erik and Cintia Gutierrez and business partners the Berbers welcomed guests to the new business. Cintia Gutierrez is Gigi Berber's sister-in-law.

The Berbers purchased the vacant Chris' Cafe restaurant, just west of Arlin Field, and completely remodeled the building, which now includes the spacious restaurant, a bar, a private banquet room for parties, an outdoor patio, salsa dancing on Friday nights and live music on the last Friday of each month.

Many who were part of the ribbon cutting complimented Gigi Berber on the food, having eaten here already. Richland County Commissioner Cliff Mears suggested people try the beef street tacos.

"They're like nothing you've ever add," he said.

Gigi Berber said they consider everyone at the ribbon cutting not only their customers but friends.

Prior to the ribbon cutting she told everyone in the crowded room when she first came to Mansfield she missed her family so much as some family stayed in Columbus.

She said other family remained elsewhere, including Chicago, where they had lived in the past. She came to the United States from Mexico 28 years ago.

Gigi Berber told everyone that now she finds the city not only a place for her business but a place for family and friends.

"Right now everybody that is here is my family," she said, thanking everyone for their support and belief and allowing her and her husband to give the best of what they have inside, as she covered her heart with her hand.

The restaurant's main door is the east door.

Hours of operation are Mondays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Tuesdays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
