Twin River Casino Slated To Reopen In Early June

LINCOLN, RI — Rhode Island's Twin River Casino is set to reopen as part of phase two, Gov. Gina Raimondo announced Thursday. The casino is expected to open either June 8 or 15.

An exact reopening date has not yet been announced because casino officials are still determining what logistically needs to be done to ensure a safe reopening.

Both Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun Casinos, both just over the Connecticut border, announced they will be reopening June 1, with social distancing requirements and cleaning protocols in place.

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont disagreed with the decision, Raimondo said, but had not authority to overrule it because the casinos are on sovereign Native American land.

On May 21, Raimondo said she was "disappointed and surprised" the casinos will reopen, saying there was no way Rhode Island's casinos could reopen June 1.

"At the end of the day, it's a big risk," she said, adding that she was watching Las Vegas closely to see when and how they reopened.

Foxwoods announced a slew of safety measures that have been put into place ahead of the reopening.

"Your safety is our priority, and we want to make sure you feel safe and comfortable both when you arrive and during your stay.," the company wrote in a statement.

Anyone who is considered "high risk" for contracting COVID-19 or is feeling unwell is urged to stay home. The casino will be limited to 25 percent capacity and all guests will be temperature-checked upon entry. Anyone with a fever of 100.4 or higher will not be allowed in.

In addition, all employees will wear face masks, and guests are asked to do so as well. The layout of the casino has been reconfigured to encourage social distancing, and restaurants and bars will be sanitized frequently. More information is available on the casino's website.

Similar safety features have been implemented at Mohegan Sun, as well, such as guests being asked to sanitize hands and wipe down machines and chairs before use.
