Twinsburg Township trustees seek input about ballfield use

Twinsburg Township trustees are seeking public input regarding a proposed agreement with the Twinsburg Baseball League for full maintenance and limited use of the Harvard Road park ballfield in the Heights neighborhood.

The field, which has been in place for decades, was substantially improved in 2018 through a partnership with an area non-profit that leveraged township funding to secure donations from many area businesses and individuals.

Under the agreement, TBL would be responsible for field maintenance and clean-up, including but not limited to tarping/un-tarping mound and home plate, plugging base slots, field lining, raking and dragging pre- and post-use as necessary and general dugout and field cleanliness.

All maintenance materials, equipment and tools would be stored off-site. The township would provide materials (dirt, clay, etc.) to TBL for field maintenance and continue to cut grass surrounding the field.

TBL use of the field would be limited to three weeknights (4 to 9 p.m.), plus Saturday from 9 a.m to 9 p.m. from April to October, with usage during such times limited to TBL-affiliated teams, including TBL’s membership base, including kindergarten through 12-grade youth residing in the city school district, along with coaches and umpires.

In addition, TBL would host not less than one introductory baseball camp on the property each year. It would be free for township youths, and the township would assist with advance communication to residents about registration.

A copy of the proposed agreement is available for review on the township website at www.twinsburgtwp.com, under “current programs”, as well as at Township Hall, 1790 Enterprise Parkway.

Public comments may be submitted either in person at Township Hall during normal business hours, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., by fax at 330-963-6816 or by e-mail to info@twinsburgtwp.com.

It is the intention, but not the obligation, of the trustees to consider the proposed agreement at an upcoming regular meeting.

“The board of trustees looks forward to working with the TBL to perpetuate the ballfield’s improved conditions, and to hearing from residents about the proposed agreement,” said Trustees Chairman James Balogh. “Former Township Trustee John Curry would be proud to see that the field will see increased use and continue to benefit the community.”

The TBL includes boys and girls ages 5 to 18 years, and provides supervised training of youth for educational and recreational purposes, and in an effort to combat juvenile delinquency.

TBL provides the opportunity for the boys and girls to play and learn organized baseball without regard for their ability, with sportsmanship stressed over and above winning.

Parents of the boys and girls participating in TBL pledge to provide positive support, care and encouragement for their children. TBL operates under the supervision of a president and board of directors.
