Twitter has been accused of withholding millions of dollars in severance payments from laid-off workers, but that hasn’t stopped Elon Musk and co. from implementing an ad-revenue sharing program that’s paying millions to high-profile users.
The recipients of the new program include the controversial Andrew Tate, known for his right-wing views, and left-leaning twin brothers Ed and Brian Krassenstein, reports NBC News.
Twitter introduced the program on Thursday, allowing eligible creators to earn a portion of ad revenue generated from replies to their posts.
“This is part of our effort to help people earn a living directly on Twitter,” the company announced in a blog post.
Elon Musk had previously mentioned that the ad-sharing payouts to creators would total $5 million altogether, adding that while he is eligible to receive a portion of the revenue, he will donate his share to the payout pool for others.
The program began as invite-only but Twitter says there will soon be an application process for interested users.
Andrew Tate — the controversial right-wing promoter of “traditional masculine values” who was charged last month with rape and human trafficking in Romania — reportedly received $20,379 in the rollout of the program. He pledged to allocate the entire amount to his Tate Pledge charity initiatives.
Meanwhile, the Krassenstein brothers, Brian and Ed, received payments of $24,305 and $24,877, respectively. The brothers gained prominence on Twitter through their anti-Trump tweets and left-leaning commentary on current events.
Other Twitter profiles who received ad-revenue payouts included podcaster and political commentator Benny Johnson, Babylon Bee writer Ashley St. Clair, and the anonymous account End Wokeness.
